One hand took a slow path from my back to my hip. “There’s cake in there. If Frannie and Sylvie don’t get to sing happy birthday to you, they’ll ignore us for a week.”

“And that’s a bad thing?”

Olivia leaned back and smiled, and when she did, the air shifted. The wind changed.

It now blew in a direction that pushed Olivia and me together, instead of apart. The atmosphere no longer swirled with animosity and bitterness. Gone was the old anger and sharp-edged annoyance.

What was in its place frightened me to my battered core.

I loved her.

I loved Olivia.

This was…unexpected. And a bit terrible.

“Let’s go inside,” she said, finally stepping out of arms reluctant to release her.

“You go ahead.” I took her fingers in mine and kissed the hand that carried her wedding band. “I’ll be inside in a bit.” I needed a second to get it together, to possibly convince myself I’d confused love with sentimentality. To relish the kind of moment I might never have again.

Olivia hesitated, but with a squeeze of her hand, let me go.

I watched my medieval princess walk inside, her dress billowing and her hair wild against the breeze.

I knew I was in trouble.

I had fallen for my wife.

And that game could never end well for someone like me.

ChapterForty-Two

OLIVIA

Olivia

This afternoon we meet Paolo and try on tuxes.

Lachlan

I already bought a tux.

Olivia:

This one’s for the movie premiere.

Lachlan

Tuxedos are all the same.

Olivia

Like video games are all the same?

Lachlan

My divorce attorney will be contacting you immediately.

“She’s smiling again, Rosie.”
