“Jesus Christ, Kytten.”
“It’s not a big deal. I’ll stop at the station and pay the fine.”
“It is a big deal if the sheriff runs a background check. And knowing what I know about him; you can be sure he will run a damn check.” His fingers swept over the keyboard as he searched for information. “Shit.”
“What?” I asked as I got up and moved around the table to look over his shoulder.
“They left Flagstaff.”
“What do you mean, left?” I asked.
“I mean they moved the whole damn club to Hillsdale, Wyoming.”
“Why would they do that?”
“Probably looking for Irene,” he said absently as he clicked the keys in front of him.
“Why would the whole club up and move for one old lady? Pepper isn’t even an officer. I mean, yea, her dad is the former president of the God’s of Mayhem, and her brother is the president now. But just marrying her would seal the alliance. Do you think Zeus knows what happened to her?”
“Oh, he knows. I made sure of it. I just didn’t tell him where she went.”
“Ok, but even if they are trying to save their asses, getting her back won’t ensure that Zeus doesn’t retaliate. And why not just send Pepper and a few guys? Why move the whole club?”
“If I had to guess, Irene wasn’t entirely truthful with us. I think this may have been about more than just a battered wife.”
“Sypher, how did they find her?” I asked, not wanting to ask the question burning in my gut.
“I don’t know. None of our clients have ever been found before.”
“Amber was found.”
“No, she wasn’t. Amber was safe in Chicago, but she left. No one here knew who she was until I told them.”
He clicked a few more keys and cursed, “Fuck.”
“What is it?”
“I need to talk to someone. Why don’t you follow me to the clubhouse? You can’t stay at the motel, not with the Death Dogs hanging around,” he said, packing up his laptop.
“I’m not going to the clubhouse.”
“Why?” He stopped to look at me, and I had to think of something quick.
“I’m supposed to be lying low remember?”
He nodded, and I breathed a sigh of relief. “I’ll talk to Grayson and see if you can stay at one of the cabins. Stay here for now.”
“No, I can go into town. The Death Dogs won’t venture out there because it’s too small. They are trying not to be seen, I’m sure.”
“I’m sure King knows they’re close.”
We walked outside and got on our bikes. “Call me when you’re headed back and I’ll make sure we’re here. And I’ll talk to Grayson.”
I followed Sypher back to the main house and out onto the road. We rode in tandem until the road split and he went toward the clubhouse, while I made my way to town.
I had skipped breakfast to meet with Sypher. If I was lucky, Trudy held back a bear claw for me.
