Hears you . . .
Harriet ignored the tightening in her belly and glanced over her shoulder to her husband who stood in the doorway with a fierce scowl on his face.
Tiny prickles raced across her skin.
She had yet to grow accustomed to using that title. Husband. Ah, but even with such a ferocious look, he was still heart-stoppingly handsome.
Do not get distracted, now, Harriet.
“Who are you?” Leeds directed at Rohan, his eyes not once touching her. The wolf had focused on his prey, and this time his prey was her best friend.
“Rohan Graves,” Rohan answered before Harriet could introduce the men.
“I know who you are,” Leeds said in a low voice. “I meant who are you to my wife?”
“A friend.”
“A friend who embraces a lady like that?”
Oh, Lord. He’d seen that? How long has he been standing there?
“Goodfriends.”
“A good friend who calls my wife darling?”
“Childhoodfriends.”
“A childhood friend who provides her illegal drink?”
“Bestfriends.”
“I see.”
Harriet gave an awkward laugh. She, for one, couldn’t see anything. The men were sizing each other up, that much she gathered, but there seemed to be an unspoken conversation nestled in those few lines they’d tossed at each other.
Whateverthatdialogue revealed, however, clearly made Leeds unhappy, which in turn, and for some unfathomablereason, madeherhappy. Her mood suddenly improved exponentially. Indeed, Leeds’s reaction to Rohan might reveal more of his character, a subject that Harriet was becoming ever more passionate about.
A memory hovered on the edge of her mind, a vague flash of a man sitting in the doorway staring at her with gentle eyes, but before Harriet thought to grab hold of it, it vanished.
Had Leeds come into her room last night?
Surely not.
She blinked away the haziness and smiled at Rohan. “Shall I ring for tea? We haven’t seen each other in ages.”
“Another time perhaps.”
“Why? You are here now, aren’t you? The least you can do is join me for tea.”
Rohan didn’t mince words. “When I heard about your marriage, I came to see with my own eyes how you are faring.”
“My wife is well.”
Rohan arched a brow. “That remains to be seen.” He patted Harriet on the shoulder. “I’ve retired from the sea and decided to settle down in London for the unforeseeable future. We have ample time to catch up.”
“That is amazing news!” With the knowledge that Rohan would be in London, some of the weight on her shoulders lifted. This man would always be her champion. No matter what.
“Also, I’ve found a home for Chester. A reserve where he will be free to roam. My people will collect him later today. I thank you for taking care of him for me.”
