As soon as the words left my mouth, I realized that might not be the best idea.

Preston chuckled like he could guess what I was thinking. “That sounds like a great idea.”

The teasing tone in his voice had me fighting not to squirm. There was just a hint of something wicked in it, and I wasn’t sure how I felt about it beyond simply being turned on.

“I thought the clothes were well designed and will sell well. Especially those nightgowns; that style has been popular lately.” As he spoke, his finger stroked over my hand, sending a shiver through me. “What did you think of the nightgowns?”

Um. I focused on the lines in the sidewalk, trying to find a good response.

“They were well made?”

A question probably wasn’t the right way to answer.

He chuckled and squeezed my hand. “Do you think they would feel soft?”

“Yes.”

Shit. That came out too fast.

There was no laughter that time, so I turned my head just enough to see a tender smile on his face. My dick liked that smile as much as it had the wicked one.

“That soft fabric would slide over your skin…” There was the barest pause before he continued. “If you had it on, that is.”

“Um…I…” Was that a question? “Yeah, it would be soft.”

“Which color did you like best?”

That was an innocent question, right? People had color preferences on all kinds of things.

“The pink one.”

Because I had one exactly like it at home.

He paused his questions as a group of people passed us on the sidewalk. The way he stroked over my fingers said he was waiting deliberately, and I appreciated that. Some people, even real life friends, never understood that. There were a few work buddies who always tried to ask me personal questions, no matter who was around.

Preston slowed his walk just enough that the group sailed by. When they were far enough away we had our privacy again, he picked up the conversation. “The pink one is a good pick. I think you’d look good in the white one, though.”

Because it was see-through?

“Thank you?” That was the appropriate response to a compliment. Right?

He chuckled again. “You’re welcome.”

Before I had to think of a question or, even worse, another answer, we approached the restaurant. Preston reached out and held the door for me, and when I smiled in thanks, his hand stroked over my back as we entered the building.

He’d never touched me like that before…it was even more personal than when he’d first touched my hand. It felt…possessive.

Work Preston was attentive and polite, but he’d never let his hand caress over my back or linger just above my belt. Another shiver ran through me, and from the low hum Preston made, I had a feeling he knew exactly how he’d affected me.

The thought wasn’t as frightening as I would have expected it to be.

“So how’s your burger?”

Of course, he asked right as I bit down into the burger. I gave him a dirty look as he laughed. “That good, huh?”

Yes, it was, but that wasn’t the point. The bacon burger was better than I’d expected, considering the place looked like a generic sports bar. I nodded, trying to chew enough that I could swallow.

Preston grinned. “Don’t choke.” Then he actually winked at me. “Not on the burger, at least.”
