There’s a pause as whoever she’s talking to speaks then Freya’s eyebrows shoot up. “News travels fast I see.” She looks over at me then turns her back and lowers her voice.
I have a feeling she’s talking to the woman who helped her when she escaped from her dad. We’re pretty sure she’s also the person who gave Freya the means to take off her anklet. The piece of tech she used was beyond impressive and Oz is having a field day studying it. He tried using it, along with Freya’s burner phone, to track Freya’s contact down but hit a brick wall. We have a hunch about who this mystery woman is, but we’ve not told Farrah. If we’re right then she’s doing more good than bad, despite her illegal methods.
Freya finishes on the phone and strolls back over to me. “You’re nosy, you know that?”
I hold up my hands. “If she helps keep you safe, in my books, she’s golden.”
Freya’s eyes shine then she throws her arms around me.
I hug her back, brushing my fingers over her hair.
“Thank you,” she says into my chest. “For everything.”
I press a kiss to the top of her head. “Anytime, Angel. Anytime.”
CHAPTER SIXTY
Freya
I USE MY shiny new key to open the front door. My lips curl upwards as the lock disengages. This newfound freedom feels good.
The guys are still hovering a lot, but I managed to convince them to let me go out for a ride. I’ve finally fully healed from my sister’s handiwork, and I reveled in the feeling of speeding down the roads, the vibrations rolling through my body, the force of the wind pressing against me. And now, instead of returning to an empty house, I get to come home to the guys.
I tuck my helmet under my arm and push the door open. I love how the hallway opens out straight into the living room. All I have to do is kick off my boots and take a few steps and I’m in the heart of the house.
River, Eli, Oz, and Jude are sitting on the couches. They go quiet when I come in and for a second I panic, until I see the smile on Jude’s face.
I put my helmet on the side and join them in the living area. I’m about to ask what’s going on when I see the FBI badge sitting on the coffee table. I grin. “Is that mine?”
River nods.
I go to reach for it, but Eli leans forward and hooks an arm around my waist, pulling me back.
“Nuh uh,” he mutters, “not so fast.”
I pout. “I want my badge.”
“And you’ll have it,” River says. “But we need to get a few things straight first.”
Eli tugs against my waist and I fall back onto his lap. He keeps his arm secured around me as I narrow my eyes at River.
He turns the tumbler he’s been drinking from around on the side table like some sort of mafia don. He’s got that look too, his eyes dark as he watches me. “This team works because we trust each other, and we work together. You are now officially one of us which means… there will be no more lies, no more secrets and most importantly no more running.”
I nod, that’s fair enough. They know all my secrets now anyway and the last thing I want to do is run from them. “Okay,” I say.
River quirks a brow.“Try again.”
Oh.I glance at the others and squirm a little in Eli’s lap before giving River what he wants. “Yes, Sir.”
Eli groans, his chest vibrating behind me.
“Better,” River says.
I squeeze my thighs together, trying to ignore the flush of heat running through me. “Can I have my badge now?”
Eli brings his lips to my neck, and I can feel his smirk.
“Not quite,” River says.
