Hence the joke.

“Alright, man?” asked JT as he met my eyes. I glared at him without responding, and he shifted uncomfortably.

He needs to fucking leave. Now.

“Catch you later, Summer,” he muttered, having received the message loud and clear.

“He was just trying to talk to me,” Summer sighed as she closed the locker, leaning against it as she spoke.

“That’s not all he wants to do either. Asshole,” I retorted, watching him greet Gabe, who made a beeline for us, having shaken Kennedy off.

“I’m not stupid, Cale,” she scolded as I rolled my eyes.

“No, but you’re not immune to their charms.”

“Hey, Summer.” Gabe smiled as Summer nodded at him before turning back to me.

“Based on what evidence?” She demanded as Gabe’s brow furrowed in confusion. I glanced at her as she raised her eyebrows questionably. “I’vehardly fucked the entire school now, have I?”

“Summer,” I warned as she shook her head.

“No, I haven’t. So why do you think I can’t tell when a meathead is trying to get in my pants? This one does it regularly.” She jutted her head to Gabe as his mouth opened, then closed as I narrowed my gaze at him.

I knew he liked my sister; he always had. But she wasn’t interested in anyone, and I wasn’t complaining. It sure made my job easier.

Gabe held his hands up, his eyes wide with alarm. “I’m just a flirt. It’s nothing personal!” he exclaimed, his eyes darting from me to Summer.

I watched him briefly before turning back to my twin. She was giving Gabe a look that made me wonder if something had gone on between them, but as she turned her blue gaze to me, a commotion came from the bottom of the corridor. I turned to see two guys squaring up to each other, both pretty equal in size, both looking pretty pissed off.

Gabe frowned as he studied the guys before turning to me. “Ten bucks on Rodgers.”

I scoffed as I checked out the other guy, Hanson. There was no way Hanson would beat Rodgers.

“Nah. Rodgers looks pissed off as fuck.” I leaned back on the locker as Summer looked from me to Gabe, shaking her head.

“Instead of placing bets, why don’t you break up the fight?” she hissed, pushing past us and striding towards the circle that had now surrounded the group.

Oh, for fuck’s sake.

Gabe nodded at me, and we followed Summer, pulling her back by the arm as she strode forward, determined to stop the fight. She hated violence, yet I knew these guys had tension that had been bubbling up for weeks. I didn’t want her getting a right hook on my watch. My dad would murder some fuck. Probably me.

“Summer!” I tried to pull her back, but she tugged her arm away, pushing herself between the two guys.

“Stop! It’s not worth it, whatever this is!” Summer pleaded with the two boys.

Daniel Rodgers had smoke coming out of his ears as he panted, his finger pointing over Summer’s shoulder to Liam Hanson. “You’re a fucking dead man.”

Liam smacked his hand away in anger and snarled back at him. “Fuck you. It’s not my fault your girl is following me around like a lost fucking puppy. If you fucked her right, we wouldn’t be here.”

Gabe strode forward, wrapping his arm around Summer’s waist, and I heard a fist crunch against bone, and blood spurted from Liam’s nose.

“Gabriel! Put me the fuck down!” Summer screeched as I smirked at her anger, knowing Gabe was in for it now.

Gabe put her down, his eyes fierce as he held her shoulders still. “You’re fucking welcome.”

Summer turned and clasped her hands to her mouth in horror at the two guys throwing punches at each other on the floor. Suddenly, the teachers came round the corner, strolling forward like a bunch of garden gnomes.

“Summer, stop being a dick. Don’t get involved in other people’s shit. You could’ve got hurt,” I snapped as she threw a hateful look in my direction.
