"Why not?"
"Because you're not like that," he said. "Ifyouhit someone, you'll do it head-on."
I paused to think. "Is that a compliment? Or an insult?"
"It's no insult," he said. "I'm not into games."
"Me neither," I confessed. "If you want the truth, I'm pretty awful at them."
"Good, because they're not worth playing."
I liked the way he thought, just like I liked the way he looked and the way he made love.I was definitely in danger."So back to your ex. Whydidshe try to sabotage it? Do you know?"
"Sure. It was because she didn't want us to move."
"Wait." I felt my eyebrows furrow. "Us?"
Bryce nodded. "She was going to come with me."
"You mean here to Michigan?"
"Yup." A new edge crept into his voice. "She told me shelovedthe idea. She even made noises about learning to ice skate."
I was still reeling. "So let me get this straight. She toldyouthat she wanted to move, but then she told somebody else that you were crooked, so you wouldn't beableto move?"
"Yeah, for all the good it did."
"What do you mean?"
"My books were solid, and the guy knew it. And let's say he didn't. I had another offer waiting in the wings."
"Did your girlfriend know that?"
"Nope."
"But why not?"
"Because it wasn't a big deal. The first offer was solid. And you wanna know something else?"
"What?"
"She was a vegetarian."
"Really?"
"Yeah. And you wanna guess when I found this out?"
"When?"
"On the day we broke up."
I was staring now. "What?"
He gave a low scoff. "Yeah."
"And she never told you? But why not?"
"Because I owned a bunch of burger joints."
