I felt my fingers clench. Not onmywatch, he wasn't.
Chapter 11
Harper
I was rushing around the living room trying to gather up the kittens when I heard the dreaded sound of the front door swinging wide open. With renewed panic, I turned to look.
Crap.
I'd been too slow, and now Gwen and the jerkwad were coming inside. I was standing by the fireplace holding Pepper and Pebbles, who I'd just plucked out of the nearest Christmas tree with plans to carry them upstairs before marching outside to send the jackass on his not-so-merry way.
But instead, I wasnowforced to watch with quivering indignation as Gwen ushered the guy inside along with his little dog.Huh.Maybe the dog wasn't so friendly either.
But it wasn't the guy's dog that had me seeing red. It was what the guy holding the leash had done to Aunt Celia andmightto do Gwen if he was left to his own devices.
Plus, there was the matter of that dreaded silver tag, the one I'd found less than an hour ago. If that wasn't clear evidence of the guy's skullduggery, I didn't know what was.
First, he'd been lurking around the house. And now he was lurking around Gwen. The sneak. And to make matters worse, he'd somehow weaseled his way inside.
Damn it.
This was all my fault.
I should have rushed outside right away. But I hadn't, and now in a scene worthy of far too many horror flicks, the villain was already inside the house.
It was time to reverse this, pronto.
Gwen was still shutting the door when I gave the guy a murderous look. "Soyou'rethe guy with cat? Just so you know, our aunt warned us about you."
He looked to Gwen. "Is there a problem?"
Oh, sure. Appeal to the nice one.I wasn't having it. "Of course there's a problem," I told him. "Yourcat molestedourcat."
The bastard didn't even flinch. "Oh, yeah?" he said with feigned innocence. "Well it's the firstI'veheard of it."
My chin lifted. "Sure, it is."
With a little smirk, he replied, "Just for the record, I don'thavea cat."
My eyes narrowed. "Nice try, Jerkwad."
Gwen gave a little gasp. "Harper!"
I whirled to face her. "What?"
NowGwenwas glaring – not at the stranger, but at me. "He has arealname. And it'snotJerkwad."
"Well,obviously," I said. "But I was making a point."
She looked at me like I'd lost my mind. "And what point isthat?"
I was still holding Pepper and Pebbles. Now, I shifted both kittens so they were cradled in my left arm and extended my other arm to point in the guy's direction. "Tango. I heard him say it through the door."
Gwen said, "Yeah, so?"
I gave her a serious look. "Sothat'sthe name of the cat who got Miss Lucy pregnant."
She blinked through her eyeglasses. "Seriously?"
