I stared after him, wondering what on Earth was going on. And more to the point, who exactly was Drake?
Chapter 34
Drake
When I pulled up to the hotel entrance, Gwen was waiting – not in the hotel lobby, but outside at the curb. Her small black purse was looped over her shoulder, and she was carrying a shiny blue packet.
I'd barely rolled to a stop when she stalked forward, yanked open the passenger's side door, and climbed wordlessly into the passenger's seat before slamming the door shut behind her.
I gave her a perplexed look. "Is there a problem?"
She sank lower in the seat. "Yup."
Alright, so things had been tense in the hotel room, but that didn't explain her new attitude. "You wanna tell me what it is?"
Her jaw visibly clenched. "Sure. In twenty minutes."
"Why twenty?"
"Because by then, the drive will be over."
I frowned. "So let me get this straight. You won't tell me until we're already back?"
"Yup."
I let out a low scoff. "Great."
"Terrific," she muttered.
What the hell?I wasn't one to play games, and until now, I'd seen no signs that Gwen was into game-playing either. It was one of the many things I'd loved about her.
Who this new person was, I had no idea.
Did she have regrets about last night?
Or was she still irked that I'd refused to let her drive into danger alone?
Either way, if she was waiting for an apology, she'd be waiting a long time.I had done nothing wrong, and I refused to act like I had.
A heavy silenced settled over us as I drove out of the parking lot and turned onto the main road. I'd driven less than two blocks when my cell phone rang in the pocket of my tux.
I ignored it and kept driving.Whatever it was, it could wait.
When it rang a second time, Gwen asked, "Aren't you gonna get that?"
I gave her a sideways glance. "Nope."
"Why not?"
I glanced at the dashboard clock. "Ask me in eighteen minutes."
"Why eighteen?"
"Because that's our scheduled time to talk."
She made a sound of annoyance. "Fine."
"Hey, you set the schedule, not me."
