“Spit it out. What are you up to, wife?”
Wife.
I still turn into putty when he calls me that. But now is not the time to lose focus. I have a plan to carry out and I need to keep my wits about myself.
“Just had to tinkle, husband. Did you miss me too much during my little bathroom break?” I patronizingly pat his cheek.
He rolls his eyes, “You’re up to something. I can sense it. Did you order more furniture? Because if you did, I swear to God Amelia, you need to start hiring home delivery services.”
I wave his words away as I bypass him.
“Don’t you worry your pretty little head honey, I’m as innocent as they come. Honest.” I bat my eyes playfully, to which Evan responds by simply raising one brow. Clearly his signature move.
PING
I look at my phone and see that I have a text from Hayden with a video attachment.
It’s showtime.
* * *
After promising that I wasn’t pulling a prank, Evan sat on the couch for a presentation I told him I made.
“Okay boss. Let’s see it.” Evan crosses his broad arms over his chest, eyeing me humorously.
I screenshare my phone to our smart TV.
“Okay, so I need to confess that it’s more of a present than a presentation. But you’re not allowed to make any comments until the video is over, got it?” I say in mock seriousness.
“A present. Oh God. This should be interesting.” Evan runs his hands over his perfectly shaped scruff, and I struggle to bite down my smile.
Here we go, time to press play.
I stay standing by the TV as the first text is displayed on the screen.
THE MOMENT WE FIRST MET
A clip from one of my old home movies starts playing, showing Evan’s first Thanksgiving with my family. In it, Evan is a tall, lanky fifteen year old sitting awkwardly on the plastic covered couch with loud merengue music playing all around him. He awkwardly waves to the camera when my dad shouts his name, followed by me interrupting the shot by shyly walking over to Evan, and offering him a soda. “Hi, my name is Amelia. My brother is playing Nintendo 64 is his room and he said you could play with him if you want.” Evan offers a small smile and nods, standing to meet Antonio.
I look away from the screen to see Evan’s reaction, and his heartwarming smile can’t be contained as he stares at us on the screen.
THE MOMENT I DEVELOPED A CRUSH ON YOU
The clip moved to a summer street fair in the early 2000’s. Antonio and Evan are walking over to my parents and I with freshly baked funnel cake. My dad is recording the street fair vendors, but Hayden was able to slow down the video and zoom into the bottom right corner of the screen, where we see a young Evan offering me a piece of his funnel cake after Antonio seemingly denied me some of his. You could practically see my heart shaped eyes looking up at him in awe.
That earns me a wink from Evan on the couch.
THE MOMENT I THOUGHT I HATED YOU
A sneaky picture that Xioana took of Evan and I mid-fight at the pub where we had our infamous fight is displayed on the screen.
I simply shrug and smile as Evan rolls his eyes playfully.
The next moments came in quicker, flashing countless photos of our memories together.
THE MOMENT AFTER YOU TOLD ME YOU HAD FEELINGS FOR ME
THE MOMENT AFTER WE MADE THE DEAL THAT CHANGED OUR LIVES
