He puts his hands up defensively. “I’ve already said too much. Evan needs to be the one to tell you the rest. And I know for a fact that he’s dying for an opportunity to tell you himself. Might work if you answered your goddamn phone.” He points at my phone on the table.
I stare daggers at him. “You know, for a guy who hasn’t been around for a while, you sure know how to nag like an annoying dad.” I look up to the ceiling.
He laughs softly. “I’ve been trying to earn a place back into Evan’s life. I thought saving him from losing the love of his life might earn me some brownie points. So if you don’t do it for yourself, do it for his old man.” He smiles.
I groan. “I’ve been ignoring him for a week. How do I just walk up to his apartment and say, ‘sorry for accusing you of being a lying piece of shit, still love you though!’” I throw my hands in the air.
I can’t believe I let this happen.
I let my insecurities from my previous relationships meddle with Evan and I, and now I’m hoping that there’s still a relationship left to salvage.
“I’m sure all you have to do is show up, and he’ll be happy. Although …” He raises an eyebrow while taking a sip of his coffee.
“What, although what??”
“I did hear that he’s attending a fancy charity event tonight. Might be nice for his date to show up.” He replies, mischief written all over his face.
I like this man.
The plan immediately starts coming to life in my mind. If I’m going to ask for my man back, I better look good doing it.
“I need to get to Bergdorfs ASAP! And I need hair, and makeup and … Teddy!” I shoot out of my chair.
“That’s the spirit! I’ll get you to your fancy store. I also have the contact of Evan’s assistant. This is a full on operation Amelia.” He locks his arm with mine.
OperationGet My Man Back.

I all but sprint to the personal shopping floor. I’m sure security thought I was stealing, but they let me be once they saw Maribel greet me.
“Amelia, I thought you weren’t going to the party anymore. Evan’s assistant emailed me saying that I shouldn’t worry about getting your dress altered,” she says in a tone laced with judgment.
Uh oh, I’ve upset Evan’s second mama bear.
Without catching my breath, I dive into it. “Look Maribel, this week has been a mess. I thought Evan was cheating, but he wasn’t. But he left my party after someone called him, so obviously I thought it was a girl. My ex-fiancé cheated on me, did Evan tell you I was engaged before? Anyways, he was hiding a secret from me, but it wasn’t that secret, and now he’s going to be at this event surrounded by beautiful women. And we haven’t talked since my party, and he’s going to forget that I love him, and that I didn’t mean—”
“Breathe, Amelia.” Maribel grabs me by my shoulders. “You love him?”
“Yes, I love him. I love him, holy fuckballs I love him so much and all this time he’s been so patient with me and after one fight I just up and leave him. Maribel, please you need to help me,” I plead breathlessly.
“Dear, I say this with affection. But you need to learn to shut your trap so I can help you already.”
“Yes!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you Maribel.” I smother her cheek with kisses.
“Okay, I’ll call down to the salon and get you a hair, makeup, and waxing appointment.”
“Waxing?” I say in a high pitched voice.
Maribel gives me a once over. “If the downstairs are looking like the rest of you, then a waxing will be necessary. Are you trying to win Evan back or send him on a safari?” Her eyeline drops to my crotch.
“Sheesh, okay fine. But I swear to God if this man doesn’t forgive me after I get a bikini wax—”
“Brazilian.”
“Ughhhhhhh. The things I do for EvanFuckingCooper!”
Three hours later I am in perfect hair and makeup, and down south I am as bare as the day I was born.
