She turned to go, and Wolf snarled at Prowler.
God damn it.
“Taylor, wait.”
She turned and crossed her arms over her chest. Prowler couldn’t control his gaze when it dropped to her tits. She was practically presenting them to him.
When she cleared her throat, he shifted his eyes to her, and there was pain there.
Pain and anger. He could smell it now that he wasn’t focused on Cass.
“It’s not what it looks like.”
“Whatever do you mean? The part where your ex spent the night or the part where she tried to give you a goodbye hand job from her car? Or maybe the part where you couldn’t even bother to dress to tell her bye?”
“None of that is true, Taylor, just give me time to explain.”
“So, your ex didn’t spend the night?”
“Yes, but not like that.”
Both Taylor and Wolf called him a liar without words.
“Well, as far as her getting handsy, and you being half dressed, the evidence is clear, and there were witnesses.”
“I know how it looks, sweetheart, but come in for coffee and let me explain. I have so much to tell you, and I want to start this off with full disclosure.”
Before Taylor could respond, Langley walked up to them. “I’ve left the other things you requested on the counter. I’ll get this back to the office and then file these.”
“Thanks,” he muttered as Langley dipped his head to Taylor before striding to his car, briefcase in hand.
As soon as he drove off, Taylor took a deep breath. “Look, Riley, I was wrong to be so overly emotional about Allie. You can sleep with whoever you want, and it doesn’t concern me. It’s obvious we are better off as neighbors, so let’s just shake hands and go back to that. This thing between us has run its course.”
“The fuck it has.” Prowler grabbed her arm when she turned to leave. “You’re mine, Taylor, and I’ll never let you go.”
Wolf spoke to him for the first time since calling him a meat bag.
Gentle. She’s our mate, and she’s in pain.
He loosened his grip almost instantly at Wolf’s voice, and Taylor turned.
“Wow. It is true. Shifters are real.”
She didn’t speak with fear but with dissipating disbelief and shock.
Prowler flashed his eyes, and a sad smile crossed her face.
“That’s right, sweetheart. And I can make those romance novels you read a reality if you let me,” he purred.
“That’s fiction, Riley. This is reality. And in reality, we are friends who used to sleep together. Nothing more.”
“Bullshit,” he roared. The calm her gentle acceptance of his kind had brought him completely vanished. She was still tryingto leave him. “You’re mine, Taylor, and we hold on to what’s ours. Don’t your romance novels cover that?”
Her mouth contorted like she was holding back tears. When she laid her hand on his cheek, he burrowed into the touch, and so did Wolf.
She took a deep breath and wouldn’t meet his eyes.
“I’m so sorry, Riley. I was using Allie as an excuse because I fucked up, and I couldn’t face it.” She took another deep breath and dropped her touch. “It was me. I slept with someone else. I broke the agreement, so see? We have no choice but to end things. I can’t be yours. Your kind needs fidelity, don’t they?”
