“Why do I have to say it back?” she asked.
“Because I said so.”
She glared up at him before remembering to be shy and glancing away. “I don’t have to do things just because you say so.”
Oh, his poor naive Bébé.
Of course she did.
“Actually, that’s exactly what you have to do. Because I’m now in charge. Repeat it back to me.”
“You know that you’re only in charge of my safety.”
“Actually, I’m in charge of everything.”
11
I’m in charge of everything.
Was he kidding her? He could not be serious. There was no way he was in charge of anything except safety.
“That’s not happening, mister!” All right, she sounded ridiculous calling him mister and poking her finger into his chest.
But that’s exactly what she found herself doing. She even cocked a hip.
Her attitude was back. Which was kind of a relief because she’d thought she was going to act like an idiot in front of him for the entire time she was stuck with him.
Stuck with him?
Seriously. You are acting like you don’t want to be stuck with him? Like he’s not your every fantasy come to life.
She waited for him to get irritated at her.
“It’s exactly what’s happening,” he countered. “Say, I am doing a good job.”
She blew out a breath. “Fine. I am doing a good job.”
“That wasn’t so bad was it? Now, I need to meet Tank and Big Berry and then we need to get some food into you, have our chat, and then you can go to bed.”
“It’s only five,” she pointed out.
“And you’re exhausted,” he told her. “You fell asleep in a car being driven by a virtual stranger.”
“I thought I could trust you,” she protested. Could she not? She stepped back, away from him.
Well, she tried to step away from him, but he simply tightened his hold on her.
“You can trust me. With anything. But you don’t know that yet. And I don’t think you would have let down your shields enough to sleep while I drove you if you weren’t exhausted.”
That was likely true.
But another thought just occurred to her.
“How did you know where I lived?”
“I know everything.”
She doubted that was true. And wow he was arrogant.
