“What happened to your old partner. The mixed race one,” he asked. “Did you lose him?”

Hell.

No.

The day he willingly let Ethan go was the day he had himself committed for questionable behavior.

As for the rest of the man’s comment…

Someone had better tread lightly.

From where he sat, Gene stared at the man, hoping he didn’t go there.

Usually, it was a short trip from‘mixed race’to‘half-breed’, and thatALWAYSput him over the edge when someone talked shit about Ethan’s ethnicity.

Partner or not.

Gene wasn’t a racist piece of shit.

“Oh, well, don’t worry. Ethan is still myPARTNER,” he said, emphasis on the last word so the man would get the hint. “He’s handling something else, and Greyson is helping me with my portion of this.”

Greyson studied the situation, and the tension in Gene’s voice. It was crystal clear he didn’t like the man like the captain was feeling him.

“Oh,” Oliver said. “I see.”

When he moved to go back around his desk, Gene looked a little more relieved to not have the dude up in his space.

Yeah, Greyson couldn’t wait to hear the explanation on this one.

It was time to get this handled so he could get out of there.

“Anyway, what I’m here about…It’s about Corbin. I just left the hospital after seeing him.”

Immediately, the man’s smile disappeared.

“I’m worried about him. Is he doing okay? When I found out he’d been hurt, I headed to the hospital. He didn’t want to see me, but the doctor told me about his injuries. Then, I spoke to him on the hospital phone.”

Gene let him talk.

Sometimes, when you said nothing, you learned a lot more by just listening. He was hoping the man gave him something he could use to buffer the news.

Oliver steepled his fingers.

“Honestly, I’m just waiting on the rape kit to see if he was assaulted, and then, I’ll pass it off to someone to investigate. I know he said he doesn’t want an investigation, but I’m obligated to have someone take it.”

Yeah, no.

That wasNOThappening.

‘Someone’wasn’t taking it. They were to protect Corbin’s privacy.

As for the kit, that wasn’t happening either. He and Ethan would keep their word.

The FBI file would be sealed.

The only good thing was that if he was waiting on the kit, that meant it hadn’t spread far and wide.

Well, it was time to ruin this guy’s day.
