It was only a matter of time before she got through the line of doctors and nurses. Gene wouldn’t be shocked if she was at home, looking for her old badge to try and get in that way.

Desperate times called for desperate measures.

The doctor continued.

“I need you both to talk him into a kit. Like I said, we were able to do a preliminary visual exam, but he’s not letting us do a full exam. He’s being hostile, and I don’t want to upset him more. He’s the victim in this, and we have to remember that.”

Yeah, they didn’t want to do that either.

All of this made Ethan want to rage that someone did this to Corbin. He was theirs, and now, he had to make sure he was okay.

Gene was honest.

“Well, we’ll do what we can. I can’t promise that he’ll submit to the rape kit, but we’ll try,” Gene offered. “You know how it is with victims. That shame is there.”

Oh, the doctor was aware.

“Since you’re officially handling this case, you can go in. That’s it, though. If his mother shows up, I have to keep her out. The detective wantsNO ONEin there.”

They got it.

Corbin might get upset that they were seeing him like this, but that was a chance they’d have to take.

For.

Him.

As the man headed away, Gene kept his voice low as he clued his partner in. They weren’t officially handling this, but they would be.

Soon.

“Can you talk to him? I want to call Greyson and let him know what’s going on, and see if he can help me tag team Gabe. We’re absolutely going to work this.”

Ethan nodded.

“Yeah, make the call. I’ll see if I can get Corbin to talk to me. We really need that kit, Gene, but I don’t have it in me to make him. When I woke up after what David Neives did, I didn’t want it either.”

He was aware.

Only, what Ethan didn’t know was that they swabbed him before he woke up. They also tested the condom that Corbin managed to get before their backup had arrived.

“Good luck,” Gene said, pulling out his phone to make a call into their other friend.

They had a good chance he would help.

Greyson liked Corbin, so he was pretty sure the man would go to bat for him if he heard about this situation.

In a heartbeat.

Ethan approached the room door, peering inside. The lights were off, and the blinds were closed.

Ethan could tell that Corbin was in the bed. There was a lump covered with blankets.

After closing the door behind him, Ethan moved closer, and he could see that the detective was curled into the fetal position.

That broke his heart.

At the side of the bed, he saw the man tense when he sensed he wasn’t alone.
