Blayk shrugged. “Strict orders. We’re not to touch you.”

Pulse thundering as he feared where his son lacked the obvious instinct, Jonathan sneered, “What, you’re waiting for him to do your dirty work for you?”

Eyebrow raised arrogantly, Blayk said, “I don’t give a flying fuck about Calloway’s plan. But in for a penny, you know?” He glanced to the crowd of vampires surrounding them. “Let’s go.”

Blayk ducked into the shadow.

Furious, Bennett sifted through the vampires, knocking out one, stomping on the neck of another.

His mother was as cold of a killer as he was. Movements strong and precise, Lizzy didn’t hesitate. Jonathan was no hunter, but he was also no lightweight in a fight.

Despite a few familiar faces, from the club, from her past, Adair didn’t give an inch.

With a series of handsprings, she nailed a pair on landing, swinging and knocking out another with a roundhouse kick.

Ducking, she dodged the grip of a goliath.

She swerved and knocked the feet out of another and plowed a fist into his throat before leaping back to her feet.

Bennett tossed four vampires out of his way to reach her. “Stay close,” he hissed.

Behind them, Jonathan bellowed a pained roar.

Miles away, Lizzy struggled to reach her husband, but kept getting washed back into the thick of it.

Like a juggernaut, Bennett was furious. Barreling through the crowd, he made for his father. Sprinting past him, Adair breezed through the mass of vampires, knowing even she couldn’t reach him in time.

Three of them lifted Jonathan from the sidewalk and tossed him into the back of an SUV, and took off into the night.

Arms pumping at her sides, the soles of her boots burning over the frozen concrete, Adair followed. If they lost him…

The SUV turned. Shit. Another few blocks, and they would be out in the open.

Knowing she wouldn’t make it in time, she turned down the alley to catch them at the next street.

A dark van slammed to a halt seconds before she reached the edge of the alley, blocking her path. Two vampires stepped out in front of her, the SUV carrying Jonathan disappearing from sight.

“Okay,” she muttered. “Let’s go.” Without pause, she climbed into the van and buckled up, knowing she had no other choice. Hopefully, she could find the upper hand and get Jonathan out there. “I suppose two hostages are better than one.”

As they tore off into the night, she looked out the back window. Bennett was hot on their heels, but he wasn’t fast enough.

Bennett stopped and rubbed a hand over his face before dropping his hands to his hips, turning back, already planning his next steps.

Chapter14

Blinker politely indicating their turn, the van pulled into a dilapidated warehouse on the outskirts of Paris where there seemed to be more steel buildings and railroad tracks than humans, but night was still heavy on the air. Adair let out a long breath when she saw the SUV coming to a stop in the center of a warehouse. Blayk seemed to have developed a predilection for large, far-from-screaming-distance buildings.

Jonathan stepped out of the car, his bruises already healed thanks to the rapid healing of demon hunter spouses, but his rumpled hair and clothes showed signs of the fight it had taken to bring him down. Finding a surprising smile, Adair recognized the bullheadedness he shared with Bennett, from the stubborn set of his jaw to his broad shoulders, and his fists squeezed tight in preparation to go down fighting.

Adair smoothed her top as she eased out of the van.

Blayk strolled up to her, hips steady in his confident gait, with the relaxed posture of a man that wasn’t easily rattled. “You have always been a pain in my ass.”

“You haven’t exactly made my life any easier.” She rolled her eyes.

His impish smile delivered a pang like a stake to the chest. Lovers for fifty years, she thought leaving Calloway would be tough. Yet she hardly had given him a second thought. Well, not any nice thoughts anyway. But leaving Blayk had been heartbreaking.

He teased his hands in his short hair, assessing the room. Nodding to Jonathan, he commanded. “Tie him up in the supply room. He’s the best leverage we’ve got, so don’t touch him or he won’t be of any use.”
