“Will you consider eating breakfast before you go?”

He knew he’d messed up. He knew how hurt I’d been. And here he was trying to make sure I ate breakfast and took care of myself after he’d been the one likely up all night watching me. “Can you send it to Renna’s room?”

“Of course.”

I inhaled deeply. “I’d like to go there right away and make sure she knows I don’t hate her.”

His eyes didn’t leave mine, and we just stood there in an awkward silence as the moments ticked by.

I reached out my free hand to his wrist. “I don’t hate you either.”

He closed his eyes. “I know. It is your disappointment that I cannot bear.” He gestured with his head toward the lavatory and closet. “Go change out of that deathtrap of a dress. We can talk later.”

My hand fell from his wrist as I did exactly that.

I brushed my teeth and didn’t bother to fix my hair at all. I wanted to speak with Renna first. Then I would face Krew. I didn’t want to make him feel worse than he already felt, but I felt like I also needed to be honest.

I wasn’t looking forward to it.

As I came back out into our bedroom, Owen was standing there waiting. “Can you—”

Knowing exactly what he was going to ask since we missed our morning training session, I immediately released my magic. At as close to the same time as possible, I sent tendrils of silver to the fire to put it out and relight it, as well as a sound barrier at the door, and then for extra flair I moved the book on the footrest around in a circular pattern. And then while keeping the book moving, I took down the sound barrier and again put out and relit the fire.

As I looked back at Owen, his eyebrows were up as his eyes were on Krew.

“Are we good now?”

Owen dipped his chin. “Yes.”

“Then shall we?”

He rocked back to his heels. “We shall.”

Out in the hallway, we made it two turns before I stopped in my tracks.

Owen immediately put up a sound barrier around us. “What is it?”

“Nothing.” And then I threw my arms around him in a hug.

Not having expected it, his arms were just stuck, mine around him. “Thank you for trying to help me last night. I just needed a minute of space, and you were the only one who seemed to understand that.” Him and my magic. “I wanted to give you a hug right away this morning, but I didn’t want to further torture Krew any.”

“Speaking of, how much longer will we be torturing him today?”

I pulled my arms away and began walking again.

Owen put up a finger as he fell into step beside me. “I only ask to prepare for his level ofsulking. You had every right to be upset.”

If I remembered right, Owen had also been upset. He’d held one of the king’s guards up against the wall by the throat. “Will you be in any trouble at all? For defending me?”

He shook his head. “No.” After a few footsteps he added, “Do you want to talk about it?”

I sighed. “Not really. I need to make sure Renna and I are fine and then I need to talk to Krew. So I’m afraid there will be far more talking this morning than I currently feel like.”

Minutes later, we arrived at Renna’s door.

I put up a hand to knock, but the door swung open before I could even touch it.

A puffy eyed Renna opened the door. She at least did look more rested than Krew, but she still looked like hell. And I had never seen her look anything other than flawless. It was a bit jarring.
