CHAPTER11
Iwoke to a knock and my breakfast being brought in by George and Owen.
“Sorry I woke you!” George said with a hand in the air.
Realizing the food he brought in was my breakfast and lunch both because I’d slept until mid-day, I waved him off. “Don’t be, George. It is beyond time I face the day.” This dreadful day I had been worrying over since the bonding.
“Let us know if there is anything else you need,” George said with a quick smile before leaving.
Owen put up a sound barrier as soon as he was gone.
I sat up and stretched my neck. “Why’d you let me sleep so long?”
Owen put his hands on his hips a moment. “Because I’ve been running you hard this last week. Krew said you barely slept two nights ago, so I wanted to be sure you were rested enough for today. Burnout can take a few days to recover from.”
I looked outside a moment and back to him. “Wait. So you are actually going easy on me?”
Owen grinned. “Only for today, honey, but the good news is that we now have the ring.”
My breath caught. “We do?”
He tilted his head toward a shoulder. “Well in a manner of speaking. It is currently en route with Krew. He is personally taking it to Hatcher to have it tested.”
The smartest part of that entire damn plan was to get the ring from the drop off location in the gardens and out of the castle as quickly as possible. The king would not be finding it in Nara’s room or either princes’.
“Wait. Can you still talk to Krew now? Even though he’s probably in Savaryn by now?”
“I’ll try.” I felt for the bond, and knew Owen was correct that Krew was not in the castle.Good morning.
Good morning, love.
You have the ring, I hear?
What? I wanted to be the bearer of good news. Dammit, Raikes.
I laughed.
Owen offered, “Still working, huh?”
I nodded to Owen before asking Krew,How does it feel?
Like a ring. I don’t know. Nothing about this ring reminds me of my mother. Nothing at all. But that doesn’t mean her magic isn’t still somehow trapped in there.
I considered that.Be safe today.
Always. I’ll return to you soon. Hatchet will likely need a few days with the ring before we know more.
Owen’s voice had me snapping back to the present. “Renna is on the way to eat with you before Silvia begins with ball preparations.”
I didn’t have time to be surprised as he explained, “She and Krew have fine-tuned their plan to get you out of the ball early.”
I groaned as I stood, slipping my feet into my slippers and stomping into the lavatory. “More plans.” Though I guess I had in a way asked for this when I told Krew I didn’t know how to get through the ball.
I could hear Owen’s chuckle from behind the door.
Freshened up and fully awake, I devoured my breakfast. What was it about using a lot of magic that made me absolutely ravenous?
Renna filled me in on Gwen and Molly’s tiff while we ate. It appeared things were not blowing over where they were concerned.
