No, she wasn’t ever going to do anything like this again once she got the promotion.
She searched through her folders and found her CV.
It was old and she hadn’t updated it since her last attempt at a promotion; but two years later, she had runs on the board. Even if Serena took credit for them she would know that Eve did them when it came time to assess her application. Surely Serena wouldn’t pretend that the work she had done was hers when Eve was going for this role?
But she knew Serena better than most. Of course she would take all the credit unless Eve appealed to Serena’s vanity.
That was the only way to work a woman like Serena. Tell her she was her mentor, that Eve, the little fledgling was ready to leave the nest and she couldn’t have done any of it without her lovely mistress Serena.
Even thinking about the load of rubbish she would have to write in the cover letter made her scowl but needs must, she thought and she opened a new document and started to type.
When she had finished she sat back and read it again, correcting a few typos and spacing.
Who said she couldn’t write fiction as well as edit it? She laughed. It was the perfect letter for her application. Respectful, admiring, subservient and with just enough smarts to make Serena think she had taught Eve all she knew.
Once she updated her résumé, then it would be ready to send off the moment the email was released to the company.
She pressed save and then closed her laptop.
She was ready; she could feel it.

Edward lifted up the bottle to fill Eve’s wine glass.
‘No thanks,’ she said. ‘I’m not drinking. I need to keep my head clear.’
The kitchen door opened and Jimmi ran in and jumped up at Edward as Myles came in and sat next to Eve.
Edward put the wine down.
‘I probably shouldn’t either. I need to keep getting those words onto the page or Eve Pilkins will have my head on a silver platter.’
‘Why a silver platter?’ asked Flora. ‘Why not a gold platter? Or a china plate? Or even a cutting board?’
Myles laughed. ‘What about a pizza box?’
‘Would it have to be rolled flat?’ pondered Flora. ‘We could put your head under the car wheel.’
‘Enough,’ said Eve laughing. ‘You two are so gruesome sometimes.’
‘They really are my children,’ said Edward laughing along.
Eve noticed Myles glance at Edward and then look down at Jimmi who was sitting under his feet.
‘Righto, what’s Hil left us for dinner?’ she asked cheerfully.
‘Poo on a stick,’ said Flora and then she laughed loudly.
‘Flora, please,’ Edward said sternly but Flora was still laughing to herself.
‘You’re such a loser,’ said Myles but not meanly.
‘I know.’ Flora laughed and Myles joined in.
‘She’s nuts,’ he said to Eve.
‘We’re all a little bit nuts; that’s what makes us interesting.’
