“It will take several months to arrange, so it won’t be that big of a deal,” Theo told her, his voice a little gentler.

“What if they find out that I’m not your mate?” Gemma asked. “What will your punishment be?”

He shrugged his shoulders. “At the very worst, expulsion from the clan.”

Completely worn out, physically and emotionally, this sent Gemma over the edge, and she cried. “I don’t want that to happen to you.”

His face grew hard again, and he could hear the ice in his voice.

“My life lost meaning a long time ago. I really don’t care. There wouldn’t be any difference between expulsion and seclusion. It’s all the same to me. I’ll be alone until I can finally die and be with Savannah.”

“If I had known that all of this would have happened, I wouldn’t have involved you,” Gemma said.

“Well, you did involve me, so it’s too late. I am honor bound to fulfill the vow I made, and I will either protect you or die trying,” he said. “I’ll make sure you have food and everything you need for a while. Now that you are my mate, you will be protected. I’m leaving, so you won’t see me for a while,” he said.

“Where are you going?” Gemma asked.

Theo hesitated and then said, “To prepare for war.”
