How am I going to explain this to Tait?I can’t just leave him, but this is my problem. Ben is my problem. Tait has enough on his plate right now, and I don’t need this getting out. I call the only person who will know how to fix this. Emily.
The best thing about Emily is she doesn’t care about the time. If she sees I’m calling, she knows there is a good reason for it and she answers.
“Hey, babe, everything all right?” She hears my shaky breath and continues before I can say another word. “I’ll fucking kill him. What did he do?”
I swallow and begin. “I can’t do this anymore. How well are you?”
“What do you mean you can’t do this anymore? What’s wrong? What did he do?”
“Something has come up, and I can’t stay here. I don’t want to leave Tait hanging though. Are you able to come back out?” She takes a deep breath as I continue. “Please. I’ll explain everything to you when you’re back. I just can’t tell you right now.”
“Schedule the flight and I’ll come out to cover until filming ends.”
“Thanks, Emily. You’re amazing.”
“You’d better tell me everything when you can. What am I going to tell Tait? You know he’s going to want to know why you left.”
“Just tell him I’m sorry and I’m fixing it.”
Chapter 27
Someone’s phonesomewhere won’t stop buzzing, and it’s driving me insane. I find the source of the incessant noise and answer it. “Hello?”
No response and then the phone call ends.Arse!I put the phone back down on the nightstand and sit up. I glance over at Quinn as she groans and turns to face me.
I see the look of confusion on her face. “Tait, what are you doing here?” Her voice is raspy and quiet.
“Oh, thank God, Quinn. You really scared us.”
She scrunches her face in confusion. “What are you talking about, Tait? What happened?”
“You don’t remember? You were out of it pretty bad.”
“No, I don’t remember anything.” Her eyes widen, and she pales as if those five words are the most unimaginable words in the English language.
“We think you ingested some kind of drug. I have to call Elena and let her know you’re all right. We’ve all been worried sick. I stayed to make sure I’d be able to help you if you needed anything.”
“If you thought I was drugged, why not take me to the hospital?” She rubs her forehead.
“We don’t need that kind of publicity, and I had Andrew, the staff physician, check you out. He thought you might have ingested some sort of roofie.”
“Who the hell would roofie me?” She panics.
“I don’t know. We’re thinking it was one of the drinks that arrived. The ones we thought the club sent up to us for free? Maybe the club didn’t send them up.”
I stand up and call Elena, stepping out on the patio to give Quinn a few minutes alone.
“Is she awake?”
“Yeah, she doesn’t seem to remember much of anything from last night. She seems to be okay this morning. Looking a bit worse for wear though. Can you come down? I’m sure she would like to see you.”
“I’ll be right there.”
I walk back into the room, and Quinn looks like she’s going to be sick. “Lass, are you okay?”
“No, I feel like I want to die. This is so much worse than being drunk.” She curls up in bed again and her body shakes. I toss the blankets up over her to try to warm her up, and she tucks them under her chin.
“Can you call Caleb and let him know I’m fine?”
