He likes waffles? Really? Lily cringed. What the hell was wrong with her brain?

The male detective got up from his chair and was already punching the numbers into his cell phone. “I’m on it,” he said as he strode toward the door.

Lily almost stopped him to request a water for her dry throat but the interview that was feeling more and more like an interrogation wasn’t over and Detective Sanford pushed on. “How about the Thursday before that? Did you go to the group session that night as well?”

Lily nodded, no longer trusting her wayward tongue. Yes, she had gone because she had felt the need to shore up her shields in defense of that bear’s magnetism. Had it really been such a short period of time to have gone from avoidance to full welcoming acceptance?

“And after?”

Unable to remain silent any longer, Lily attempted to think through her words before she opened her mouth, but she could feel the sweat now rolling down her back. That was the night she’d definitely gone sleepwalking, had woken fully dressed and mud-spattered the next morning. Holy shit! Was she going out, unaware and hurting people? The very thought had her eyes prickling with frustrated tears. “I went home and went to bed.”

More silence. Lily squeezed her eyes shut. She wanted to scream that she didn’t kill anybody, but did she really know that for sure? The fact was, she was a predator. Shewasa killer. She had killed before. She had taken Garrett Foley’s life without a moment of remorse when he’d attacked Daisy last year, and even before that… how many times had she thought of killing her own mate?

The male detective came back in the room and held up his cell phone. “The boyfriend confirmed she spent the night with him.”

Lily’s breath escaped in a whoosh, so relieved that they had been able to get hold of Christian and exonerate her at least from whatever crime had been committed the other night.

“He’s your boyfriend?”

Lily nodded, readily and happily agreeing with Christian’s self-proclaimed title, only to have the bubble burst with the next words out of the detective’s mouth. “Can anyone else confirm your whereabouts? You understand that the word of someone you’re romantically involved with is suspect at best.”

Lily dropped her head with a negative shake, suddenly exhausted and utterly defeated.

“She’s hiding something.” Janet said as she and Rick watched Lillian Oremun through the window as she walked toward the parking lot with hunched shoulders.

“Agreed.”

Despite that, they didn’t have enough evidence to make an arrest. Besides, Janet’s gut told her that, despite whatever secrets Miss Oremun might be hiding, they didn’t have the right woman. Not for this case. The woman had come in willingly, had agreed to be fingerprinted, and a sample of her DNA collected to be sent off to the lab for analysis. Janet suspected their killer wouldn’t make it this easy for them. But she also couldn’t afford to be wrong, so Lillian Oremun would remain a prime suspect for now… “Let’s get eyes on her. I want her watched twenty-four-seven until the killer is behind bars.”
