Even though Jay had given me his oath that he wouldn’t go after mine, I didn’t trust the man as far as I could throw him.
Two minutes passed before I turned away from the door. I searched around, retrieved my gun from under a table, and jammed it in the pocket of my hoodie. I then snagged a couple of napkins, wiped my fingerprints from the Eagle and placed it in Frankie’s lifeless hand.
There were going to be repercussions if his body was left here. But first, I had to get Krew away from this place.
“You need to leave,” I said over my shoulder and scanned the diner for cameras… And there they were. Fuck.
“We need to get to Regi,” Krew demanded.
“First, I need you safe.” I fished out the truck keys out of my jean pocket. “Take the keys, and I’ll meet up with you at the Holiday Inn in Waukegan on Milwaukee.” I grabbed his wrist and put the keys in his hand.
“I’m not leaving you.” He shoved them back into my hand. “We go together or I stay and help.”
“Don’t be a stubborn ass. Take the keys and get the fuck out. I have a feeling if the waitress called the police?—”
“Forget it,” Krew growled out. “I’m not leaving you here to face this bullshit. Besides, we didn’t do anything wrong.”
A low hiss left my lips, and a moment later, sirens tore through the night air.
“Shit,” Krew muttered.
“Too late.” I grabbed him by the shirt and hauled ass around the counter. We headed toward the back of the diner, where the kitchen was located, and the greasy smell was the strongest.
The space was empty. I bet the waitress and the cook were far from here. Though, I couldn’t worry about them. My only concern was to get Krew out of the diner.
I pushed him out the back door, and we rounded the corner into the back alley just as red and blue lights reflected off the side of the building. “Jesus-fuck.”
We dropped down next to the green metal dumpsters as the cop cars zipped by.
“That was close,” Krew whispered.
“Too fucking close. But we’re not out of danger yet,” I said, taking off down the alley.
Krew matched my quick pace. As I turned left, so did he, and we were back on the same street as the diner, about a block from my truck and a block and a half from the restaurant.
From this distance, the street in front of the diner was lit up like a parade of flashing lights. Fortunately, it wasn’t quite dawn yet, so we moved under the cover of darkness toward the truck.
There was a slim chance we could go unnoticed. If we got caught, then we had to pretend ignorance to what had happened inside the diner.
“How good are your acting skills?” I turned to Krew, taking his hand and drawing him close.
“W-what?” His eyes were riveted to our clasped hands.
I’d caught him off guard. Good.
“Pretend we’re lovers. Put your arm around me, sweetheart.” I smiled, and he swallowed hard.
“Deck…” There was a heavy meaning behind my name. An unspoken desire we’d both been harboring. I saw it in his eyes when we reconnect in the alley. And again, in the diner, when he took my hand.
This close, I could see his blown-out pupils and hear the heavy breaths he was pulling in and out of his lungs. After a slight stumble in his steps, Krew wrapped his arm around me like I had demanded.
As we neared the back end of my vehicle, I saw two cops striding toward us. I didn’t think, just whirled Krew around, pushing his back against the driver’s side of the truck. Then I kissed him hard, like we were about to fuck right there out in the open. I was sure Krew could feel the gun in my pocket, but he didn’t say anything.
Instead, Krew opened for me immediately, and the welcoming taste of his mouth was instantly intoxicating. Just like I remembered.
I tried to maintain some awareness of the police activity nearby, but that proved impossible with Krew’s luscious lips on mine. The world faded away until there was only Krew. Only him, and my sudden desperation to strip this man naked and fuck him until neither of us could walk.
As I ground my groin against his, I couldn’t miss that both our dicks were rock-hard.
