I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE YOU (READ: VIVIAN)
* * *
“About time you two made it,” Linnea jokes as she opens the front door to our parents’ house. “I was wondering if you’ll show up or not.”
“Nice to see you, too, sister,” I deadpan.
Vivian shakes her head in amusement. “What your brother is trying to say is that we really wanted to see you before returning to New York, so of course we’re here.”
“Well, he has a funny way of showing it,” Linnea says. “But get inside, it’s getting cold.”
After taking off our coats, we walk into the living room, where the Christmas tree still stands. It’ll be taken down on January thirteenth as my family likes to follow the tradition of doing so on Saint Knut’s Day.
“Look what the cat dragged in,” Pappa says from his spot near the fireplace. “I thought we’d have to wait until next summer to see your face again.”
“Nils, be nice. We all understand that Jasper had new, more exciting plans,”my mom chides playfully before coming to hug us both. “Tell me all about your trip to Lapland! I haven’t been there in a year and miss it already.”
“It was beyond amazing,” Vivian gushes. “We saw the northern lights, went on a reindeer farm, and visited Santa. Your son also took me to the Ice Hotel for New Year’s.”
“Sounds like you had fun. That’s what matters the most when traveling. Now, Jasper,” my mom starts with her mom tone, “why did we learn about your new relationship status online?”
Vivian and I exchange here-we-go looks as we settle on the couch beside my sisters. “Well, funny story…we just decided that it was best for me to introduce Vivian to my fans before the media found out who she is,” I try to explain as Linnea and Elise hold in their laughter next to me, following the conversation.
“Funny story?! Jasper, I need to know these things first as your mother.”
“Äiti…”
She silences me with that look only mothers have. “You know I have been waiting for you to date someone seriously. So why would you not tell me first?”
