Her eyes returned back to mine. “We make jokes, but it’s also true. It sounds like you’ve found your man. Where you’re supposed to be. And if that’s the case, then you need to go get him. You need to be at his side if he’s the one for you.”

I snickered. “We’re talking about a job, Gee. Not marriage.”

Yuslan shrugged. “Same difference, in our opinion.”

I scoffed in disbelief, but deep down, I wondered if the two of them were right. I mean, they’d been right with both Margo and Ginger. So, why couldn’t they be right now?

The thought filled me with a giddy sort of excitement, and I was suddenly hungry for everything sitting in front of me. I pulled away from Guadalupe touch, and I reached for my tea, ready to sip on it and let my thoughts swirl around in my head for a little while. We ate in silence as I turned things over, weighing the pros and cons before ultimately coming to a decision.

So, my stare gravitated back to Guadalupe. “Guadalupe?”

She swallowed her food and smirked. “Yes, Eva?”

I drew in a deep breath. “I’m officially putting in my two-week notice.”

She smiled brightly. “I’ve never been so happy to accept one in all my life.”

Yuslan butted in. “She’s also putting in two weeks’ worth of vacation.”

My head snapped toward him. “Wait; what?”

He leaned forward, his eyes locking with my own. “It’s so you can start ASAP. You know you’re supposed to be there. So, no use in delaying.”

I didn’t know what to say. I didn’t know what to do. So, I launched myself at Yuslan and wrapped my arms around his neck. He chuckled as he stood, taking me with him before he patted my back with his hands. Then, I released him and walked around the table so I could hug Guadalupe as well.

“I’m gonna miss you guys so much,” I whispered.

She giggled softly against my ear. “We’ll keep your membership status, complete with the discount you get for being an employee. So long as you promise to use it and come see us often.”

I kissed her cheek. “I’ll come every week, I promise.”

She rubbed my back. “Good. Good, good.”

The hug lingered for a little bit longer before I excused myself from the table. I reached over and snatched one last bite of my tamale before I made my way into their bathroom. I didn’t want to make Gavin wait for another second longer on my decision because I knew he was walking on pins and needles. And I didn’t want him to have to battle that while he was at work all week.

I closed myself in the bathroom and leaned against the counter. I smiled as I pulled my phone out of my back pocket and opened up my text messages to Gavin. My fingers typed away as I formulated the exact right way to break the good news to him, then shot the message off.

And almost instantly, it was read, and those three little dots were bouncing up and down.

Gavin: Really? Are you going to take the job?

I smiled as my fingers clicked back as quickly as possible.

Me: Yep. I’m with Guadalupe and Yuslan right now. I just put in my two-week notice as well as a two-week paid vacation. I can start whenever you need me.

Gavin: So, you could technically get over here tomorrow morning?

Me: I’d need serious help moving since that won’t give me much time to pack. But, yes. That technically means I could come in tomorrow.

Gavin read the message, but those little dots didn’t start bouncing. So, I tucked my phone back into my pocket and splashed some water on my face. My stomach growled with a need for the food out in the kitchen, so I dabbed my face off and gazed at myself in the mirror.

“I’m Gavin Lincoln’s full-time nanny,” I whispered. And the sentiment alone spread a smile so big across my cheeks that my jawline started to ache.

Nevertheless, I eased myself out of the bathroom and started back for the kitchen. I felt my phone vibrate in my back pocket, but I figured I could check it once I finished eating. The big news had been dropped, Gavin knew I was taking the job, and that’s all that was necessary until I got home.

Then, after finishing my food, Guadalupe and Yuslan packed me a massive to-go tray before I headed home. I walked into my apartment and promptly made my way into the kitchen. I wanted to take that food with me tomorrow and have Asia try some of it because I knew she’d love it. I stuck it in the fridge and gazed out across my small, one-bedroom apartment, and smiled at the idea that I’d never have to come back to this place ever again.

I have to email my landlord.
