“Now that I know you’re engaged, I’m more excited than ever for you to come in for an interview. And honestly,” Mack continued, lowering his voice conspiratorially, “I’m leaning toward you for the position already.”

Mack’s excitement spiked my heart with guilt, and I had to physically force a smile into my voice. “That’s great, thank you! I look forward to your email.”

“And I look forward to the interview. Goodbye, for now!”

“Goodbye, Mack. And thanks so much for this awesome opportunity.” I hated lying to him, and I would never do anything to tarnish the name of the team I loved so much. If telling an innocent white lie would get me this job, I would stick with it until the end.

What end would that be, though? That question definitely bothered me. Most likely, I would just have to occasionally mention my fiancee to Mack and show him a few pictures. And most importantly, be very, very careful not to be seen with another woman. If that was what it took, I was up for the task.

When I rejoined the dinner party, I pushed away my pie, suddenly uninterested. And I couldn’t help but glance over at Tammy animatedly chatting with Claudia.
