We both nod and leave the room.
“You think he’s going to say something stupid again?” I mutter to Kaz.
He grunts, clearly slipping back into brooding silence.
I pull on my boxers and grab the rest of my clothes before heading to the living space.
“I don’t think she’s brought it up to them yet,” Lily’s voice reaches me from around the corner.
I freeze.
“She needs to tell them—especially the big fucker,” Max replies. His tone is all business.
“Max, there are still too many unknowns,” Lily says, and now she sounds unsure.
Kaz appears beside me, and I raise a hand to stop him.
“Then that’s that. I just hope they understand,” Lily finishes, voice tinged with worry.
I must’ve missed Max’s response, because now I’m confused about the worry. Kaz looks the same as I feel.
We move forward, making noise so they won’t think we were eavesdropping.
Not that I was. Not really.
As we enter the living room, Lily grins at us. Max scowls.
“Well, don’t you two look…” She tilts her head. “Rumpled.” She laughs to herself.
“How can we not be, with a minx like Selene?” I tease.
Max grumbles something under his breath, making Lily burst into laughter again.
“Your bags are by the door,” she points. “Looks like you’re staying here now. And—we will be going out tonight.”
Kaz picks up his bag and a garment bag, disappearing down the hall like he already knows which room he wants.
“What do you mean, going out?” I ask, confused.
Selene’s supposed to be “missing.”
“Barbra’s hosting a black-tie event at the house,” Max says. “We’re making our move.”
Makes sense. That way we see who’s shown up in town too.
“We came up with a plan,” Lily says, pride in her voice. “Keir wanted to go over it with Selene.”
I nod and grab my own bag—there’s a garment bag hanging off the side as well.
“Won’t we all be recognized?” I ask.
We’re not exactly subtle. And neither is Selene.
“Good thing it’s masks required.” Lily winks and gestures to the kitchen island where six ornate masks are laid out.
“Okay,” I grin, excitement hitting hard. “Guess I should get dolled up.”
I turn and head to the bedroom opposite Kaz’s, adrenaline buzzing through my veins.
