I’ve been rerunning in my head our conversation as we drove back from the weekend and when we last spoke as he dropped me back at my apartment. Nothing seemed to be wrong. He carried my bag into my room, gave me a steamy hot kiss, and said he would call soon.
I can’t think why he isn’t taking my calls or hasn’t called me like he said he would. I decide to send another text. I won’t be able to settle till I know he's okay.
Maybe something came up at work.
Cassie: Hey, Luke. Hope you’re okay. I texted and called but didn’t hear from you. Guess you are busy like you said with the DC contract.
There I’ve sent a text, and now I guess it’s simply a case of waiting for a reply.
Lunchtime Wednesday, and finally, I get a response from Luke to my text. Am I happy? No, I'm downright furious that it has taken him this long to respond to me. It’s a crazy, confusing text which doesn’t exactly explain his silence. I’m still no clearer as to why he hasn’t called me back.
Luke:Sorry, had to leave town. Something came up. Will contact you later.
I’m beginning to think our weekend away was a figment of my imagination as he now seems to be treating me like it didn’t happen. It’s like we're back to square one. This time though I'm not going to just be quiet and put up with his bad behavior.
I read the text message over and over again. Trying to decipher the meaning behind each word.
Where is he? What came up?
More importantly, when will later be? He doesn’t even say he will call me later. All I got was that he will contact me. But I want to know when. Does he mean a text or an email? I have no idea.
I turn off my phone and try to get back to work. It’s best I don’t think about this now while I’m here at my desk.
Later that night, I'm sitting on my bed, Skyping Alice.
Jas and Lily are out tonight, and I need to talk to someone about Luke’s stupid cryptic text message.
After the usual hello and family catchup, I fill her in on my weekend away with Luke at the beach house. All the good bits, the fun we had, and finally some of the sexier bits.
Alice loves to tell me how as a mom of three-year-old twins, she likes to live vicariously through her younger single sisters.
Personally, I think she's getting plenty of action with her hot husband, Tom. Whenever I see them together, they can’t keep their hands off each other even after five years of marriage. Life goals right there.
When I've satisfied her desire for salacious details about the weekend, I get to the main reason for my call. The fact Luke seems to no longer want to speak to me.
I read her out his text message then ask, “What do you think could be going on?”
"I've no idea. It sounds like your weekend was perfect. It must be something completely unrelated to you."
And this is why I confide in Alice because she's so wise and logical. I had been looking at it as if something had gone wrong between us. I guess that was just an old habit coming back.
She’s right, it probably has nothing to do with me. "True, I hadn’t thought about that. But I still don’t understand why he still couldn’t call and tell me what’s going on. I deserve that at least."
I hear Alice sigh, "Well, he is a guy, and you know they aren’t the best communicators. Don’t get upset about it. Why don’t you book a flight to come down and see us for the weekend? If he calls you before then, you can tell him you have plans and you don’t sit around waiting for him."
Alice is a relationship genius and I tell her so.
Her laughter drifts through the phone. "Could you tell my husband that as I’m not sure he would agree. He seems to think I should stay out of other people’s business. Hah, what does he know?"
"I’ll book my flights now and text you and Mom my flight details. It's such a good idea. I’m so excited to be seeing you all. I miss everyone so much."
"We miss you too Cassie. I’ll let Mom know you're coming. It will send her into a baking frenzy, no doubt."
"Great, my mouth is watering already. I miss her cooking. See you soon and love to all."
"Back at you little Sis."
Hanging up from Alice, I get straight on to making my booking. I log into the flight booking app and within minutes I've booked a flight from New York to Orlando on Friday night with a late return flight Sunday night.
