It'sSaturdaynight,andI’m looking forward to seeing Luke again. We’ve both been so busy at work this week so this is the first time we'll have seen each other since our park lunch date and my hot afternoon tour of his apartment. Best date ever. What I mean, of course, is best sex ever, times two.
Every day he has texted or called me. Thursday night, he called me late when I was in bed. Our call turned quickly into steamy banter, maybe not quite phone sex but as close as you can get without the climax.
I'm glad we haven't been able to see each other this week. It's given me some much needed distance as being in the orbit of Luke has me struggling to hold back my emotions. I feel like I'm falling for him all over again and at this point for me it's too soon.

Checking the time on my phone, I have ten minutes before Luke is due to pick me up from my apartment. As promised, his executive assistant, Bec, called me on Monday. She was friendly and chatty on the phone as she gave me the details of the black-tie event tonight at the Grand Hyatt. Bec will be coming along tonight, and I hope I’m sitting near her as she seems fun. But I’m mostly looking forward to meeting Luke’s best friend and partner, Blake. When Luke was at Fort Benning, I remember him often mentioning Blake. They went through Ranger training together and seemed really close, right from the beginning. He is the person closest to Luke, especially now as they're partners, the one person who knows him better than me. I bet he has some stories to tell me.
Tonight should be fun. The best bit already is I had an excuse to buy a fancy new evening gown. I love my new dress, running my hands down over the silky fabric as I stand in front of my mirror. It’s a simple long dark blue dress, but in the light, the satin shimmers with a teal hue as I turn in front of the mirror—mermaid like. Touching the smooth, silky fabric again, I love how delicate it feels sliding against my skin as it fits snuggly over my hips.
I add my gold Tiffany heart necklace, the one Mom and Dad gave me on my twenty-first birthday. It’s simple and doesn’t take away from the soft folds of fabric in the draped neckline covering my breasts. Sitting on the edge of my bed, I put on my sexy new strappy heels. Not as high as a pair of heels Lily would wear but higher than usual for me. Luckily with Luke’s height, I don’t ever have to worry about being too tall in heels.
Back at the mirror, I finish my makeup by applying a shiny pink gloss across my lips, and with a final twirl, I watch my dress flare out from my hips then float softly around my legs. God, I love this dress, but it’s time to go.
I spritz myself with my favorite perfume and throw my gloss into the silver clutch I borrowed from Jas. I’m ready to go and just in time as my phone vibrates with a text from Luke to say he is parked downstairs. He will be at my door in a moment.
Walking down the hall to the living room, Jas and Lily whistle as I do a twirl for them. Lily claps at the end of my display. While Jas hoots her appreciation, exclaiming, “Wow, that dress is amazingly hot.”
Hearing a knock at the door, I turn to let Luke in. Opening the door, we stand staring at each other, scanning every inch.
“Wow, you are so beautiful. You take my breath away. That dress…” he says, stopping mid-sentence before he leans in to brush a light kiss to my cheek.
Feeling my cheeks flush at his compliments, I smile warmly back at him. “You’re looking damn fine in your tux too.”
While I’m ready to go, I know Jas and Lily want to meet Luke, so I tentatively ask, “Do we have time for you to quickly meet my friends Jas and Lily?”
“Of course, I’d like to meet them. I want to know more about your life, and that means meeting your friends. Maybe they can tell me all your secrets.”
This man seems determined to break through my defenses to my heart. I hope the girls don’t give him too hard a time. They're happy for me but can be a little protective especially when they know our history.
I take Luke’s hand and walk back into the living room. Beaming as I introduce him to my best friends.
Luke is polite but seems a little nervous, which I find quite adorable. He likes to act tough and hard. Unapproachable. But this man has depths I haven’t even begun to explore even after all these years.
Lily, in her usual sweet way, makes him feel at ease by mentioning his company and a mutual acquaintance. With her work, she moves in similar corporate circles.
She surprises me by saying, “I heard your company was receiving an award tonight. That’s impressive for a relatively new company. Congratulations to you and your partner on your nomination.”
“Thanks, Blake and I were surprised to get the news,” he responds sheepishly.
