I couldn’t stop tossing and turning, and for some reason, Don was next to me sleeping like a baby. Deep down, I wanted to slap the shit out of him for being so content after having our first real argument as a couple. But instead, I slid my ass out of bed, grabbed my cell from my nightstand, and headed into the living room.

Something had to give. I needed to know if I was wrong for feeling the way that I felt. Why should I have to want a wedding after the craziness I’d been through? In fact, why was it necessary to want a wedding at all? If you love someone, you love them. Having an audience to share that love isn’t necessary.

Plopping down on the couch, I grabbed my throw blanket and spread it over my legs. I needed someone to talk to, and since Don didn’t seem like he was interested in being bothered, I decided to call Izzy.

“What’s wrong?” Izzy questioned after answering the phone on the first ring. “It’s not Jayson, is it? Do I need to pull up and shoot somebody?”

“Oh my God, girl, calm down. Everything is fine. Put your gun away.”

“You sure?”

“Yes,” I said, laughing.

“Well, why the hell are you calling me after one o’clock in the morning?”

“I can’t sleep. Don and I got into an argument.”

“About what?”

“Marriage.”

“Damn, you two are already talking about getting married? You guys don’t waste any time, do you?”

Grabbing the remote, I flipped on the TV. “It wasn’t that kind of talk. I was just telling him about a conversation I had with Kendra. In a nutshell, she asked me what kind of wedding I would want if I had another one, and I told her that I didn’t want one at all.”

“And let me guess…Don wants a wedding?”

“Yeah, he does, and he made it out to be a pretty big deal.”

“Are you sure thathe’sthe one that made it a big deal, or was it the other way around? I know how you get Nova.”

I paused for a moment and thought back to the argument.

Did I make it a big deal?

Not willing to accept that, I shook my head. “No, it was all him.”

“Okay, fine, what did he say?”

“He just said that he wants to share that moment with the people closest to him.”

“And that makes sense.”

“Yeah, but why do we need a room full of people to validate our love for each other?”

“Did he say he wanted a room full of people, or did he say close family and possibly close friends?”

I shrugged. “I mean, he said the latter, but I know how this stuff goes.”

“No. You know how shit went with what’s his face. This isn’t the same. When Don says close family and friends, I get the feeling that’s what he means.”

“Yeah, well, that’s not what I want, and I made that very clear.”

Sucking her teeth, Izzy said, “So, how did the conversation end, little miss stubborn?”

“There wasn’t an ending. I tried to talk more about it, but he refused.”

“I don’t blame him. You shut his ass down early on. What more did you expect him to say?”
