I gave Law another stern look, and finally, he strolled away and returned to the bedroom. As soon as I turned to Latrell, he said, “Why in the fuck do you have a nigga in the same place that my daughter lays her head?”
“Goodbye, Latrell.”
“Answer me, Alauni.”
“I don’t know if you’re deaf, dumb or fucking stupid. I don’t have to tell your ass shit. Get the fuck out of my apartment before I turn your ass into the police and you never see Layne again.”
He eyed me in confusion. “What the hell do you mean?”
“I mean what I said. If you don’t leave, I’m going to file harassment charges on your ass and tell the courts that you have a drinking problem, and you’re unfit to be anywhere near our child.”
“Wow, that’s some fucked up shit. You wouldn’t really do that?”
Looking him in his face, I said, “Try me.”
Clearly, that wasn't what I wanted to do, but at this point, I was at the end of my rope. It was one thing to have to deal with Latrell and his antics over the phone, but I wasn't going to deal with it in my own home…not anymore.”
“Okay, fine. I’m out,” he said, opening the door and walking into the hall.
“Thank you.”
“But—”
“No buts, just leave.” I slammed the door in his face, hoping like hell that he didn’t make another attempt to get back in.
I waited a few moments before looking through the peephole to make sure that he was gone. Once there was no sign of him, I returned to my bedroom. “You handled that shit horribly,” I said, looking Law dead in the face.
“What?”
“You heard what I said. You handle that situation terrible, which really annoys me since I thought that you would be more mature in this kind of situation.”
“You’re joking, right?”
“No, I’m not.”
He let out a dry laugh. “Nah, you’re definitely joking. You and that nigga are lucky that I decided to leave the room when I did.”
“Oh, is that so?”
“Yeah, that’s so.”
“Law, if you’re going to be in my life, you can’t allow someone like Latrell to get under your skin. He lives to push buttons and—”
“Don’t give me a lecture on how to handle your baby daddy when you don’t even know how to handle him.”
“Wow, that’s a fucked up thing to say.”
“Well, it’s the truth. You’ve allowed him to treat you any kind of way, and now you’re mad because you have someone in your life who refuses to allow it to continue. I’m not going to apologize for standing up for you.”
“Oh please, don’t try to make it seem like you were standing up for me, that was a contest to see whose dick was bigger.”
Law shook his head. “I don’t even get down like that. I don’t have to prove shit to anybody. Not him, not you…no one.”
“Whatever,” I said, walking past him and grabbing some clothes out of my closet.
“Where are you going?”
“Out! I need some fresh air.”
