“Fine, I’ll come to you, but you have to agree that we’re going to talk.”
“What part of,I don’t want to talk, don’t you understand?”
“All of it,” I said.
“Well, that’s too bad, because I’m not changing my mind.”
“Okay, sounds like you won’t be driving home then.”
She groaned. “Law, stop playing around.”
“I’m not playing around. I’m just trying to talk, and you don’t want to do that so…”
“Fine!” she spat. “We can talk. Just hurry the hell up. I’m ready to go.”
“Damn, so much attitude.”
“Yeah, it’s going to be a lot more of that if you don’t stop messing around and come say what you’ve got to say.”
“I’ll be down in just a sec.”
“Mmhmm,” she replied before hanging up the line.
I had no idea what else I was going to say to her. I’d told her everything that I could. The only thing that I could do now, was try to convince her that I wasn’t a manipulator.
Hopefully, she would at least agree to believe that.

Okay, so maybe Iwasbeing a little over the top with my reaction. And maybe Law was right about the fact that something else was bothering me, and I was taking it out on him. But even if that were the case, I still felt some kind of way about how he handled the situation with Maxine. No, he didn’t put a gun to her head and tell her to have an abortion, but I’m sure that he wasn’t very comforting in the situation either. Men usually weren’t. Especially, if they didn’t want to be tied to that woman in the first place.
When he stepped out of the apartment building, I was sitting on the trunk of my car with my arms folded over my chest.
Rolling my eyes, I held out my hand. “Keys.”
“Not until you listen to what I have to say.”
“I’m still here aren’t I?”
“Yeah, but the second I give you these keys, you might drive off and I’ll never see you again.”
“Stop being so dramatic.”
“It’s the truth. I know you.”
“Yeah, okay. Finish talking.”
He took a step forward, inches away from being between my legs, which I quickly closed. I didn’t want him trying to pull a fast one.
“Damn, did you really have to slam your legs together like that?”
“I most certainly did. You’re not about to slide your way into my cookie jar as an attempt to get out of this mess that you created.”
“I wasn’t even going to go that route, but since you brought it up,” he said, using his hands to pry my legs apart, “I’m guessing that’s what you want me to do.”
I pushed him away. “No, it’s not. I want you to give me my damn keys.”
