“No, we couldn’t. You do way too much shit that I don’t get down with.”

Licking her lips, she stepped forward and rested her hand on my chest. “Oh, so now you have a problem with the way I get down? You didn't seem to have a problem before. In fact, you were all for it several times a day.”

“That was before I realized how crazy you were. That shit you did was foul and you know it.”

She stepped back. “Okay, maybe I went a little overboard with the gun.”

“A little overboard?” I said, looking at her like she was crazy. “You shot me.”

“Yeah, but it was an accident. You know that.”

“An accident that I had to cover up. The whole damn force thinks I left because the job was too much for me to handle. When really, it was your ass. I was protecting you and stepping away from some shit that I didn't need to be doing in the first place.”

“Don’t give me that, Law. You were protecting yourself.”

“How?”

“Because of what you did.”

“You keep saying that, but I didn’t do shit to you, and I would appreciate it if you wouldn't tell anyone else that nonsense. Especially my family. Oh, and stay away from my mother. You have no business going over there.”

Rubbing her belly, she smiled. “Actually, I had plans to share our little story with her, but I changed my mind.”

Eyeing her in disbelief, I said, “Just stop, Maxine. Stop!”

“Do you really want me to stop?”

“Hell yeah!”

“Then ditch your new girlfriend. She’s cute or whatever, but she’s in the way, so let her ass go.”

“What?”

“You heard what the fuck I said. Leave her, or else.”

Squeezing my eyes shut, I lifted my head. “This can’t be real. This has to be a fucking joke.”

“Oh, it’s definitely real, and if you don’t believe me, I’ll show you just how real it is in no time.”

I stepped forward, my eyes looking right into hers. “Is that a fucking threat?”

She scoffed and gave me a gentle pat on the chest. “You know better, Law. I don’t make threats. I make promises. Trust and believe, that’s definitely a promise.”

I wanted to pick her ass up by the neck, but I couldn’t afford to lose my cool in the damn restaurant. Especially since I knew that Maxine purposely said or did things to get a reaction out of me.

Needless to say, she was damn good at it.

But instead of giving her what she wanted, I sealed my mouth shut and eased past her. This was the kind of trouble that I couldn't afford, but I had no idea how I was going to get away from it.

“So, you guys are legit now?” Denver said, stepping away from the railing of his balcony to look me over.

“Yes, we are, and I don’t want to hear your mouth about it.”

“Oh, you know damn well you’re going to hear my mouth. I told your ass that you were going to give in.”
