“I don't see any smoke.”

Jillian looked around as well, making a face. “Maybe it was a false alarm. I know it happens every once in a while. We've got a lot of teenagers.”

Maybe. I tapped my foot, chewing on my cheek.

Nina grabbed one of my hands. “It's sweet you're worried about him. But I was serious when I said Frank was good at his job. I don't think I've ever seen the man get injured before. He's very aware of his surroundings.”

It should have helped my nerves, but it didn't. Frank hadn't known the darkness was near us anytime I was around him. What if something had happened? What if he let his guard down when I was around?

I took a deep breath, knowing I was spiraling. Frank was good at his job, and he took his role seriously. Whatever was going on, he could handle it, and I needed to get a grip on myself.

“Do you want some tea?” Jillian asked as she moved towards the back of the shop.

I shook my head. “No, I should probably get home.” I paused when I remembered that Frank drove. I didn't have a way to get home besides walking, which Frank would not be pleased with.

Nina could see me pause and raise an eyebrow. “What? You look sad.”

“Frank drove me,” I said with a sigh. “I guess I could walk home.”

Jillian shook her head quickly. “No, you are not walking home. You're pregnant, and it's like three miles. I can take you. Jesus, Frank would remove me from the pack if he knew that I let you walk.”

“You're working,” I said softly. “You can't just close the shop up because of me. That's not fair, and your sister would be livid.”

Jillian snorted. “I'll just put the closed sign up for a few minutes. My sister isn't going to care. Everyone is clearly out looking at whatever is going on. I won't be missed for ten minutes.”

“Are you sure?” I asked. I'd met her sister and didn't want to upset her. She seemed nice.

Jillian nodded. “Of course, I can't let you walk home, Nina. Jesus, Frank would be pissed. It won't even take me long.”

I couldn't even tell her he would be okay with it. Frank would be livid if he heard that. He had been hovering over me, making sure that I didn't do anything that would affect the pregnancy. But even with how caring Frank had been, I had so many questions.

So much was going on, and I couldn't get my mind straight. I wasn't sure where we were sitting. What was our relationship, and what did I mean to Frank? What did he mean to me?

I shook my head and looked back at Nina. “You're absolutely sure your sister won't mind?”

Nina nodded as she locked the door and flipped the sign. “It's already done. Let's go.” She turned us to the back, and we made our way out the back of the flower shop. Outside, the wind blew slightly, and I searched the skies once more for smoke, finding none.

Jillian elbowed me softly, offering me a gentle smile. “He's going to be okay. He's probably doing an extra look around to be sure. We can drive by and let him know I'm taking you home if that helps.”

I nodded as we headed for Jillian's car. We hopped in the car, and as we started down the road, we took in the cars and thefire trucks stationed in front of a few buildings. “I wonder what happened?”

Jillian looked. “That's weird.”

“What is?”

She pointed at the buildings. “Well, these buildings have been empty for years. No one uses them, and it would be hard to break in. So, a fire is unlikely.”

I felt my stomach sink. I didn't like this feeling that was hanging over me. “Can you pull over?”

Jillian pulled over, and I spotted Kerr near a vehicle. He was on the phone, nodding his head. I opened my door and got out, starting across the street.

“Kerr.”

Kerr turned towards me and looked at me, confused. “What are you doing here?”

“Where's Frank?” I asked as I scanned the crowd, not finding him.

Kerr looked even more confused. “What do you mean? He told me he was going back to the flower shop to get you home.”
