“Jesus, Nina. You're burning up!”
“I'm fine,” I grumbled, rolling over. “Just let me sleep.”
“Get up. I'm taking you in.”
I groaned. “Frank, honestly, I'm fine. Just let me sleep.”
“No, you're burning up, Nina. You need to be checked out.”
“A high fever is not a reason to drag me to the clinic.”
“Nina, you either get up, or I'm calling a doctor here.”
I sat up and looked at him. “You can't be serious.”
“I have one on speed dial.”
“You're insane,” I snipped. “I'm fine.”
“I don't care if you're fine because you're not. Now get up.”
After twenty more minutes or so of arguing, Frank took me to the pack healer. Even the short drive sucked the energy out of me, and I was exhausted. I had to give it to Frank. I wasn't feeling fine.
Once we were back in the room, Frank tapped his foot as he sat next to me. I looked at him. “You know you didn't have to come back. I'm a big girl.”
“You look like you could pass out. I'm not taking any chances.”
I rolled my eyes.
There was a knock on the door, and a lady walked in. “Hello, I'm Anna. The healer. What seems to be bringing you in today?”
“She's got a high fever and low energy lately.”
I looked at him. “What?”
Frank nodded. “You've not left the house in a week, Nina. I've gotten messages from Jillian asking if you were sick starting on Monday.”
I frowned. Had he really? Had I been low energy lately? I guess I was spending a lot of time at home lounging around, but not that much. At least, I didn't think it was that much.
Anna sat down and looked between us for a moment before she nodded. “Have you two been sexually active?”
I felt my face go red, and Frank nodded. “Yes.”
“That's not.” I waved my hands. “I'm just tired.”
“Fatigue is the first sign of pregnancy,” Anna said, giving me a soft smile. “I'll have a nurse come pull some blood. The fever could just be, and you need to take it easy.”
I sat numb as she got up and slipped out of the room. I chewed on my inner cheek. Surely, I wasn't pregnant. I mean, of course, there was the possibility, but we only had sex once. But that was all it took sometimes.
My mind seemed to pause as the question loomed. Was I pregnant?
Chapter 16 - Frank
I was standing at the bottom of the stairs, waiting for Nina. I glanced at my phone, checking the time. It was a few minutes past six, and the party started at six thirty. “Nina, we're going to be late if we don't leave in the next few minutes.”
“I'm coming,” she said as heels hit the stairs.
I glanced up and stared, taking her in an all-black sweater dress. I knew that Nina was only a few weeks along at this point, but she glowed. She looked breathtaking, and I stammered. She walked down the stairs, stopping at the last step.
