Kailey smiled at me, and I offered to smile back. She had always made sure that when the guys and I came in, we were taken care of. I knew that it was because I was around. I wasn't blind to the eye glazes or the batting of her eyelashes. I'd seen it many times, so I knew what she hinted at. But she was the owner's daughter, and I knew how protective he was about her.
“What do you guys want to eat?” Kailey asked, leaning against the table. Her breasts sat perky in her shirt, and I was tempted to tell her she should put something on to cover up. But I knew she wouldn't. I had told her before, but she simply rolled her eyes at me, telling me they were how she made her tips.
She looked at me, and I shrugged, looking back at the table. “I'm not really hungry.”
She elbowed me, stepping further into my space. “Oh, come on, you always eat when you come in. Dad just added the butter patty to the list of burgers. It's actually really good.”
“I'll take one,” Dave said quickly. “And fries with it.”
Kailey tilted her head, waiting, expecting me to just agree like I normally would. But I wasn't hungry. I lost my appetite the moment I noticed that Nina was there.
“I'm fine,” I said.
I looked past Kailey and found Nina frozen in her chair. She had a few people standing next to her, talking. I imagined friends, but I didn't care. I turned just as Kailey pressed her breasts against my arm. “Then some fries? If I come back and tell my father you didn't want food, he's going to think I'm bad at my job.”
I snorted. “He will not.”
Kailey made a sound and nodded her head. “No, he will. Because you always eat when you come in. Even the day after you guys got the flu, you still came in and ate.”
“Because your father made me chicken noodle soup.”
“The point still stands,” she rested her chin on my shoulder and gave me pouty lips. “Please, for me?”
“I wish I got that type of service,” Dave said.
Kailey flashed him a scowl and pushed off me. She crossed her arms. “I'm bringing you fries.”
Before I could argue, she was gone. Dave frowned. “She shouldn't be hanging on you like that.”
I shrugged, not really caring. Kailey had always been that way, and I knew she did it with other people. “It's Kailey.”
“But you're married. If the wrong person sees that, they might take it the wrong way.”
I looked back towards where Nina was sitting, wondering if it bothered her. She was my wife in the legal sense, but that was it. There were no emotions, no love, and no sex. So, it shouldn't.
“How about we play?” I pulled my pool cue up and hit the balls. They divided nicely, and Dave moved to hit the yellow one. “How are things between you guys?”
I shrugged. “Fine.”
“Well, I'm gathering you guys haven't had sex since your wife didn't come storming over here screaming at you.”
I scowled, tightening my hold on my pool cue. “You really want to talk about my sex life?”
“I'm talking about the lack of it,” he chirped, hitting his stick forward and knocking the yellow ball into the pocket. “It's been almost two weeks.”
“What's your point?”
He shrugged. “Just wondering if the Council will be watching.”
“I'm married. There isn't anything more they can force.” I bent over, aiming at the red ball, and smacked it, hitting it into the pocket. “Besides, it's just a matter of time before she does something.”
Dave looked at me, confused. “Like what?”
I wasn't sure yet, but I knew it was coming. Nina was just like the rest; she would either give up her plan and run away, or she would snap, and I would know what it was.
Dave frowned. “Kerr told me you thought she was planning something, but I just thought he was a little dramatic.”
“You shouldn't be talking to my brother,” I growled.
