But she was too hungry to care, and figured if he was going to end things, at least she wouldn’t have to be heartbroken on an empty stomach.

“Sure,” she muttered, making her way down the hall behind him, past the office where it all began, and into the front of the restaurant—which for some reason was totally dark other than the light pouring in through the windows.

She glanced at Nick, who appeared to be heading for the light switches.

“You’re closed on a Friday? Are you doing repairs or something?”

“Not exactly,” he called over his shoulder. “Come over here, I want to show you something.”

She rounded the corner out of the hallway and arrived in the dining room, only to find the tables pushed off to the sides, and a guy holding an acoustic guitar, who instantly began playing the soft strains of an Elvis song that she happened to love.

Nick stood in the middle of the empty floor, hands in his pockets, wearing a totally mischievous grin.

“Happy anniversary, sweetheart.”

And suddenly, she realized her crazy sister had been wrong for once.

“Sammie,” he said as he approached her. “I seem to remember we had a party once, and I really wanted to dance with you, but you had to say no.”

She smiled as her eyes began to well up. “I remember that.”

“So, what do you say?” He held out a hand. “Would you like to dance?”

She gleamed at him. “I’d love to.”

With that, one of her hands was on his shoulder while the other rested in his palm, and her head was nestled snug under his chin.

“You sure are a good dancer,” he mentioned casually. “Was it all those early morning practices in high school?”

She had to laugh, then swatted his shoulder playfully. “Of course it was.”

He chuckled and kissed the top of her head. “I’m glad we finally got to do this.”

“Me too.”

“I’d really like to do it again.”

She smiled. “So would I.”

“Maybe tomorrow night.”

“Sure.”

“And the night after that too.”

“Sounds good to me.”

“And every night for the rest of our lives.”

Her eyes grew slightly.

Sothat’swhat he’d been up to all week.

Oh my God, he totally fooled me.

She lifted her head off his chest and gazed at him with eyes glistening and chin quivering. “I think that sounds great.”

“In that case,” he went on, casual as ever. “I need to ask you something.”
