“Right.”
He set down the phone and rubbed his palms together, almost as a prayer, desperately hoping and wanting to believe this was the opportunity he needed to make everything right.
Chapter Twenty-Seven
Samantha
Samantha slapped the lid of her laptop shut in disgust. Literally nobody was hiring. Nobody except for the one person she had zero desire to see.
Well, maybe not zero desire. But definitely such a microscopic amount of desire that she decided it didn’t count.
On top of being completely stressed out about her minuscule savings that would carry her through this season of unemployment, as well as being thoroughly crushed over the whole Nick thing, she was totally bored.
She picked up her phone and typed out a message to Jenna.
What are you doing?
A moment later, she received a reply.
Debating pulling out the Christmas decorations.
Samantha laughed.
I think you’re about a week early.
I’m just excited, LOL.
Can I call you?
Instead of responding, Jenna called first.
“What’s up?”
Samantha drew in her breath. “Something happened on Friday.”
“Something bad?”
“To say the least.”
Jenna gasped. “What?”
“Well, first,” Samantha began. “I got fired—”
“What? Why?”
Samantha traced her finger around the edge of the laptop. “My boss got his panties in a twist over me taking Thursday afternoons off to take Nick to therapy.”
“Ugh! What a jerk!”
“Totally.”
She paused as her chest ached slightly, wondering if she was about to cry again as she recounted the awful fight. “And then I went to Nick’s place, and he started havingthetalk with me, which was way worse.”
“Oh no!”Jenna exclaimed. “It was bad? What did he say?”
Samantha shook her head and closed her eyes briefly. “Jenna … he is totally Eddie part two.”
“What!” Jenna gasped again. “What did he do?”
