Hunter was gesticulating wildly until he finally froze and turned to look at him. Brant frowned but followed when he ran outside.

“Officer Garson, secure the perimeter before CSI comes in! Start canvassing the street and don’t mess that up!”

Brant only had time to slide in the passenger seat and successfully close the door before Hunter was burning rubber through the quiet streets.

“What’s happened? You’ve found her? You’ve found Kat?”

The car swerved into the main road and Brant had to hang on for his life.

“Just before we left the precinct, I asked for the team do to a check on the owner.”

“That Merritt man?”

“Yeah, well, the Merritt family is in Florida for the holidays, have been for a week according to the flight manifest.”

“So, who took the first car or the second? Or used the house to hold Kat?” He didn’t want to imagine what had happened in that house to cause all the blood, not yet. Not until those three men were dead.

“Don’t know yet. But you were right, there was a car in the garage, the Merritt’s second car. And it hasn’t been long since they left. Alerts were sent, and the car was seen on the Maine toll road’s cameras ten minutes ago. Two unmarked patrol cars are in pursuit and waiting for our arrival. That means that they kept Kat there for the last twenty-four hours at least.”

Brant almost didn’t dare ask. “How many people in the car?”

The car jumped forward as they reached the intersection. “Four. And one of them was your Kat. She’s still alive.”
