I nod as I take a seat. I watch Kai walk around the table and sit back down.
He looks even sexier today than he did last night. Was it only last night that we kissed? Fuck.
Today, he is dressed in a dark blue suit, a crisp white button-down shirt, and a pair of black-framed glasses. Now, in the light, I can see the tattoos covering his hands and curling up his neck.
If anything, it only makes him more attractive.
When my eyes meet his face, he smirks, winking at me. “Do I meet your approval, princess?”
I can feel my cheeks blush. “I’m surprised you put an offer in.”
He gives me a knowing look as I change the subject.
“I told you I was going to.”
I shake my head. “No, you asked if it would scare me if you did.”
“Does it?” he asks, tilting his head to the side, studying me.
I look away. “No.”
Not in the way he thinks. I should be afraid he would hurt me, but instead I’m afraid of the way he makes me feel.
He reaches out, brushing a finger across the back of my hand lying on the table. I startle, looking over to Callum, but he isn’t looking this way. Kai follows my gaze.
“I could kill you before he could save you,” he tells me, his voice dark.
Looking back, I met his eye. He means it. He could kill me dead right here. “If you tried, you would be dead too.”
His eyes flash in amusement. “You put too much faith in my will to live. Besides, wouldn’t that be the same tragic ending as star-crossed lovers are destined?”
“They didn’t murder each other.” I point out.
“Didn’t they? They made decisions that lead to them each taking their own life.”
“I suppose that’s a basic way of looking at it.”
“Enlighten me then,”
I take a sip of water before I respond. “The rules of their society restricted them. The vendetta within their families was so deep that they were unable to escape it. All they wanted was the choice. The choice to choose their own lover. Instead, they were forced to stay apart, scheming to find ways to be together. In the end, they took their own lives, but it was because their families couldn’t see the irreparable damage they were doing. Had they given them a choice, they may have found in a couple week's time the two despised each other.”
“So you think the forbidden aspect made the attraction stronger.”
This time when he reaches his hand out, I expect it. “I’m saying there is always some sort of exhilaration in doing something against the rules.” I say lightly.
When his finger brushes against mine, the familiar electricity flows through us. Turning my hand, I grip his, pulling it closer to look at his tattoos.
“Why so many?” I ask.
“I like them.”
“What do they mean?” I ask, as I run a finger over them.
“Some mean nothing. Just art to decorate my skin. Others have meaning, but I can’t share that with you quite yet.”
“Yet?” I raise a brow.
“It’s only our first date, princess.”
