She nods. “Let’s go.”
I cannot remove myself from his side. Watching him fight with his father was the single most nerve-wracking thing I have ever had to do in my entire life.
My body is exhausted not only from my lack of sleep last night but from being so high-strung the entire time.
So the entire ride over to Killian’s safe house, I sit in Kai’s lap, straddling him. He doesn’t try to stop me. I avoid his left side, the aggravated gunshot wound seeping through the bandages, burying my face into the right side of his neck instead.
I know he has to be in pain, but I need to be close to him.
I think he feels the same way. His right hand presses into my lower back, holding my body to him as his left hand is on the back of my neck, holding my head into his neck.
I can feel him feather kisses along the side of my head, but he doesn’t speak. Neither do I.
All we do is accept the comfort the other is providing.
“We’re here.” Kenji’s voice floats from the front of the car.
Kai moves his left hand, letting me lean back to look at him. His eyes are glassy, like he is in a fog.
“Are you okay?” I whisper.
He nods. “As long as I have you, I will always be okay. Let’s go tell your uncle that he’s not getting you back.”
I swallow hard. “Maybe I should talk to him. He doesn’t take demands well.”
“He doesn’t have a choice, Cleo. Unless he wants to kill the new Yakuza leader, starting a war, he is not getting you back. From this day forward, you will be with me.”
I bit my lip, my stomach clenching. I don’t want him to die. I don’t want Killian to hate him.
“Please, Kai. Don’t be impulsive. Let me try to talk to him first.”
He sighs. “Fine, but if he says no, I’m kidnapping you.”
I chuckle, pressing a kiss to his lips. “It’s not kidnapping if I come willingly.”
His smile is bright. “Let’s go deal with this. Then I want to take you home and fuck you until tomorrow.”
I gasp. “You’re injured.”
He only laughs. “Injured, not dead. I let you have last night. Tonight, I am worshiping your fucking body. Fuck the pain.”
I shake my head, turning to open the door. Kenji is standing outside, his hand held out. I didn’t even realize he had left the vehicle.
I let him help me out, smiling when Kai’s hand finds my waist as he steps out behind me with a grunt.
I know his body must be aching, but he does his best not to show it. If I didn’t know the extent of his injuries, I wouldn’t even know he had been hurt.
Now that we are out of the car, he has slipped his shirt back on, hiding his chest and bleeding body parts.
When we reach the door, it opens, Callum standing in the doorway.
I let go of Kai to crush him into a hug. “Callum. You’re okay.”
He squeezes me back. “I am. I see your man found you safe and sound.”
I nod up at him. “He did. Thank you for saving me.”
“Always. Let’s go see Killian. He’s been waiting.”
