“You look frustrated.”

I startle as I turn to find Jacob standing in my doorway.

“Jesus, don’t you knock.”

He shrugs. “What’s wrong?”

I wish I could list off the reasons everything is wrong. The days seem to have passed by at warp speed, but I’m still no closer to finding anything out. Tiffany hasn’t had any other meetings with the mysterious man as far as I can tell. I have been trying to hang back to try and catch them. She also doesn’t trust me yet. Originally she told me we would be going to parties, but so far, she has left me out of any plans.

I’m at a loss as to what to do.

I let out a sigh. “Life isn’t turning out the way I thought it would.”

He chuckles. “It rarely does. Do you want to go for a ride with me?”

I tilt my head. “Where?”

“Come on, just come.”

“Fine, but if you’re about to murder me, I have to tell you, no one will look for me.”

He bursts out laughing. “No murder. You’re my sister, remember.”

I follow him down the hall. “How could I forget? You adopted me.”

“That I did. Now get in the car before I change my mind.”

Once in the car, he drives as we listen to music.

It’s not until we are an hour out of town that I turn to face him. “What’s going on?”

“I thought you needed some time to clear your mind and maybe get away from things. I don’t know what’s going on with you, but you seem to be frustrated and overwhelmed.”

“I am. It’s cheerleading and school,” I tell him, giving him a partial truth.

“Why haven’t you been to see Willow?”

Fuck.

He noticed.

“Are you stalking me?”

“No, but I pay attention. Are you guys fighting?”

I bite my lip. “I had to distance myself from her for now.”

“Cheerleading.”

“What?”

“That’s why, right? They don’t like her, so you’re dropping your only friend for them?”

“It’s more complicated than that.”
