“What the fuck was that back there?” I explode.
“That? Oh, that was you doing something idiotic and making Chase’s life difficult. You better hope you didn’t fuck everything up,” he yells back.
“Me? Are you being for real right now?”
“What were you two even doing there tonight?”
I shrug, settling back in the front seat. “We were bored. Figured we would check out this party everyone was talking about.”
“Party? You mean rave. The only reason people go to a rave is to take molly and have sex. Is that what you were looking for?”
“If it was? What’s it to you?”
His fists tighten on the steering wheel. “Don’t fuck around, Willow. You’re playing with fire,” he grits out.
“Good thing I’m not scared of a little burn.”
“Jesus. You always have something to say, don’t you?”
“Damn straight. I’m not one of your little sluts that will sit by all demure and let you do your thing. Now, answer my question. What the fuck was going on back there?” I demand.
“Not my business to tell. I’m taking Hailee to her place, then we are going to go home and wait for Chase. I’m sure he’s going to have plenty to say to you.”
“Fuck that. I don’t have to take his shit or yours. I’m not your property.”
“No, Willow. You’re not. However, you decided to get yourself mixed up in our business not once but twice, so now you’re going to need to suck up that indignant pride of yours and follow the fucking rules. If you don’t, you’re going to end up dead.”
“Why do you even care?” I exclaim, tossing my hands up.
He slams his fist against the steering wheel, making Hailee and I jump.
“Stop with the fucking tough girl act. Do you even fucking care that you had a gun pointed at your head?”
“What?” Hailee gasps from the back seat.
I glance over at her. “I’m fine.” I look back to Nate. “Of course I care. What about the fact your brother, the same one who claims to be trying to help me, used me as a human shield when guns were being pointed at us?”
He lets out a humorless laugh. “You think that’s what he was doing? Fuck, you’re clueless. I’m done answering your dumbass questions. You want to know what was going on? Then ask Chase.”
He stops out front of Hailee’s house.
“Thanks for the ride,” Hailee says to him before turning to me. “Please be safe.”
I nod, giving her a small smile. Nate waits for her to close the door to her house before pulling away.
What a gentlemanly thing to do,I muse to myself.
He remains silent the rest of the ride home, not even waiting for me to get out of the truck before he heads to the house.
I make my way slowly into the house, closing the door behind me. I look for Nate, but he seems to have disappeared into his room.
I grab a glass of water before closing myself in my designated room. After an hour of waiting, I curl up in the bed, keeping an ear out for Chase.
I must have fallen asleep at some point because next thing I know a blinding light is waking me.
I rub my eyes, trying to orient myself back to the world of the living.
“What the fuck were you doing there tonight?” Chase’s cold voice greets me.
