“Says the girl who lied and told my mom that we live together,” I reply with a chuckle. Not that I’m complaining.
I tried not to laugh out loud when I realized what she’d done before I could rescue her from the conversation. I saw her uncomfortable stance from across the backyard. I should have made it to her sooner, but I was too busy staring.
It took some convincing, having her pack a bag and bringing her over to my place for the night. When I reminded her that my mom is best friends with her boss’s wife though, she agreed. The truth is that I couldn’t care less whether or not my mom sees her here in the morning. I just wanted to hang out with her more.
She was different around other people compared to how she was around me. She’s never shied away from giving me a piece of her mind. She’s been headstrong and stubborn every time I’veever talked to her and I like that. It hasn’t made me want to leave her alone, if anything, it’s made me want to be around her more.
But today at the Grant’s something changed.
“Accidentally,” she huffs as she slumps down into the recliner. “It just came out!”
“Mhm,” I quirk up an eyebrow. “Just warn me before you blurt out that you’re pregnant or we eloped or some shit.”
Just as I turn toward the kitchen, a sandal flies across the room and hits me right in the middle of my back. With no one here to impress, the snarky side of her has returned and it puts a smirk on my face.
“Throw your shoe at me again, and I’ll spank you with it.”
“Pfft. You won’t.” Her arms are crossed and her face is twisted in a skeptical but curious scowl.
“The hell I won’t,” I say over my shoulder. She scoffs and gives a dismissive wave of her hand.
Try me, I think to myself.
Moving across the kitchen, I open the fridge and lean in, palming the tops of two cold cans of beer and pulling them out. It’s early in the evening and I don’t plan on going to sleep just yet. She’s been somewhat reluctant to talk to me every other time I’ve tried, but I don’t give up easily. After putting a beer in Savannah’s hand, I pull my phone out and click on the group chat.
where y’all at?
Tripp
headed back from the sale barn
stopping in town for a burger and a beer you wanna join?
I’m good.
aren’t you hooked up to the trailer
Heston
yeah and?
I laugh picturing Tripp and Heston pulling in behind the bar with a whole-ass stock trailer taking up ten parking spots. Lifting my eyes from the screen of my phone, I see Savannah taking her other shoe off and flipping up the footrest on the recliner. This is as good a chance as any to get her to talk to me.
Savannah’s here
Tripp
By choice?

Just take your time getting back
