“I am not dressing up as a Transformer.”

I chuckled. “There aren’t any couples really but imagine if an Autobot fell in love with a Decepticon. The drama.”

She grinned and shook her head. I was glad that I’d been able to lighten the mood.

Just then the waitress came over to grab our order.

We were halfway through our meal, having a lovely debate over what literary or movie couple we could be to fit the theme Cora had chosen, when an obnoxious voice I wish I never had to hear again interrupted us.

“Well, well, well, look who’s here.”

No fucking way.

“You can’t be serious,” Dani muttered, irritation flashing in her eyes as we both turned to see Jenzy standing by our table.

“Fancy seeing both of you here,” Jenzy said.

“Are you stalking me now? You know this is one of my favorite restaurants. Funny how Gabe just posted a picture of us having dinner and here you are.”

“Taking him to our place?”

“It’s not ours, you idiot.”

“Are we still going to play this game? I know this is all fake.” He waved his hand over us and I reached for Dani’s fingers, squeezing them.

Chapter 22

DANI

My body seized up, but I wasn’t about to show that to him.

“This again. Really, Roger, it’s getting old. Why can’t you just move on and let me be happy?” I schooled my tone to sound annoyed but not riled up.

“Because this isn’t real between you two. I was a dick and you’re teaching me a lesson or some shit.”

I scoffed. “You can’t be serious.”

“Come on, Dani. You know we’re perfect for each other. We could be a total power couple. Star NHL goalie falls for veteran star NHL goalie’s daughter. The sponsorships would be amazing.”

I should have been offended, but I didn’t care at this point. “Here come the true colors. This was all just a ploy for publicity?”

He shrugged. “And you’re also hot and good in bed.”

“You disgust me.”

“That’s not what you said to me when you were in my bed.”

He fucking leered. What the hell had I ever seen in this guy?

“Jenzy, don’t be an asshole,” Gabe said, still holding my hand. I wished I was sitting next to him, but his touch was enough to help ground me; otherwise, I might have given into the urge to punch Roger.

“What’s wrong, Tucks? She faking it for you?”

“Are we really going to do this right now in the middle of a restaurant?” Gabe gritted out, but now I was beyond pissed.

“Maybe I was faking it foryou.” I couldn’t stop the words from coming out of my mouth, and I squared my shoulders when Roger leaned in. I knew I was pushing his buttons, but what the actual fuck with this guy?
