I go downstairs and let him in. As he steps in, flashes from cameras go off.
“Did you work with the cartel?” someone shouts.
I shut the door.
“How many are out there now?”
“I counted five photographers.” He pulls me into his chest, and I wrap my arms around him. “Did you listen to the podcast?”
“I did. How could he say those things?”
He steps back and looks into my eyes. “Because he’s a liar.”
“Why does he keep getting to put out false information?”
“Reed’s attorney is filing a lawsuit against him today. Also, Agent Stevens wants to question Peter. Once the old podcast was brought to her attention, she discovered Peter got a few things right that weren’t known to the general public.”
I lead him into the kitchen, where all the curtains are closed.
“Why did this blow up? Why are there photographers outside my house?”
We both sit down at the table.
“Unfortunately, his podcast is popular. And he told quite the story. People believe him and want justice for those who framed him. At least that’s what I got from those protesting outside of Reed Hawthorne Security.”
“They are protesting?”
He nods. “They have signs and are yelling.”
“Do you think Reed’s lawsuit will stop him?”
Hunter shrugs. “I hope so, but who knows? The hard part is going to be finding Peter to get him served.”
“Was he already discharged from the hospital?”
“No. He was never admitted. He went to the ER, got checked out, and they sent him home.”
I guess he wasn’t really hurt. “How’s Moose?”
“Good. He is home now, resting.”
Thank goodness. I worried about Hunter or his friends getting hurt and then Moose got shot. I’m glad it wasn’t really serious.
“I went to Peter’s apartment, and he’s gone.”
“Gone?”
“A neighbor told me they saw him pack his car with two suitcases last night and leave. He knew we would be looking for him.”
“Peter said you used him to kill Marco. Is this something the police are considering?” I ask.
Hunter shakes his head. “No, the police ruled it an accident. Reed spoke to an officer who questioned Peter.”
“But if Peter is claiming he was used as a weapon, then it wasn’t an accident,” I say. “He’s hurting his own defense.”
“I think he’s more worried about the cartel right now. I’m certain Peter created this episode solely to get the cartel to come after RHS or me instead of him.”
“So, you think he’ll go back to talking about Stacy in the next episode?” I ask.
