“They let you keep your phone,” Lightning prompts.

“Yes, I asked if I could play a video game. They said sure. But then there wasn’t any service and no Wi-Fi, so it was useless.”

“And when did you realize you’d been kidnapped?”

He swallows. “Well, after they gave me my phone and I realized it was useless, I got up and walked to the front door. One of the men beat me to it and held up a gun. He told me to sit down and be quiet.”

I turn to Harding, but instead of asking more questions, she says, “There is a coffee shop close by. I’ll go see if they have anything in their kitchen.”

Lightning is by her side. “I’ll go with you. I’m hoping I can figure out how to make some coffee really quick.” He glances at me. “I’ll bring some back.”

“You better. And water would be great,” I say.

They leave, and I tend to JB. “Feeling better?” I ask.

He nods. “I’ve never been that cold before.”

“Can you move your toes?”

“Yeah, the boots are great. My feet never bothered me like my hands.”

I check his hands, and they are warm to the touch. “When we get on this boat, we should bring these to use as blankets.”

JB nods. “Good idea.”

We sit in silence as we wait for the other two to return. My mind wanders to Piper. The only thing keeping me from losing my mind about her is the fact that Durango is with her, and her ex is in jail. But not having an update to confirm that is hard. I stand up and go to the windows. When I’m on assignment, I’m focused, and I need to stay that way. There’s nothing I can do about Piper.

The streets are empty. No one is walking around. It’s not surprising. It’s way colder than normal out there, and there is no reason for anyone to go out.

JB’s snores pull me from my thoughts. I sit down and lean against the wall. On the far wall is a map of the area. I stand and go to it. After locating where we started and the airport we intended to hike to, I’m convinced no one willlook here. They might go to the port that services the cruise ships, but hopefully, they won’t head this way before tomorrow.

The problem is we have no idea how many people are looking for us or if those four were it. I’m certain there are more, or there will be. This kid is worth too much to them.

I’m deep in my thoughts when Harding and Lightning come in through the back door, carrying two bags and a tray of coffees.

“Jackpot,” Lightning says. “They had an assortment of pre-made sandwiches in their refrigerator.”

“I suspect it was supposed to be put in the display cases today,” Harding says.

I grab a cup and take a sip. “Damn, this is good.”

“We grabbed bottled water too,” Lightning says.

JB sits up. “I’ll take a coffee.”

I hand him one. “Did you leave money?” I ask Lightning.

“Of course. Roast beef okay?” he asks.

I nod, and he tosses me a sandwich.

JB scratches his head. “Got anything vegetarian?”

Harding tosses something at him. “I do.”

He opens it up. “Thank you!” He takes a large bite.

“What’s on that anyway?” Lightning asks.
