“I wouldn’t go out there yet!” McClure calls.
But I ignore him. Durango is right behind me. Outside, John and his parents are all pressed up against three separate cars being read their rights. John catches my eye and tries to push off the car with his body, but the agent shoves him against it harder.
I walk over to Tom. “I have to know. How did you get Piper into the house? Because she wouldn’t have gone willingly.”
Tom snarls, then spits at me. I dodge it.
“You!” John calls out, staring at me. “You framed me!”
I laugh. “No, I wasn’t behind any of this. I’m just here for the show.”
“Me too,” Durango says, glaring at John. “Have fun in prison, assholes.”
We turn and leave. By the time we get to Durango’s car, he’s laughing.
“Here for the show. Priceless.”
I laugh, too, as I get in. “Well, I had to see it with myown eyes. Now let’s hope they don’t get some fancy attorney who gets them out of this.”
Durango turns to me, smiling. “Oh, I doubt that will happen. They’re broke, remember?”
I hope that’s true because those are three people I never want to see again.
CHAPTER 41
Piper
Even though I’mback at work, I can’t stop smiling. John and his parents were denied bail, and all three were deemed flight risks. They will be in custody until their trials. Hopefully, they never see the outside of a jail cell again.
There is a knock on the office door, which is unusual. My stomach clenches even though it can’t be John. When I peek out the window, I spot Willow. I open the door and she steps in.
“Willow, what a surprise,” I say.
I haven’t really talked to her since our chat in the bathroom at the restaurant. It was eye-opening, and I’m glad I followed her in there. We needed to clear the air.
She grimaces as she takes me in. “I’m sorry. Durango told me you’d gotten hurt, so I should have been prepared.”
The bruises on my face are healing very slowly. I tried once to cover them with makeup, but it looked worse. Now, I’m impatiently waiting for them to go away.
“It’s okay. I get it.”
She smiles. “Thank you. I’m glad I caught you. I wanted to apologize. When we first met, I was going through some stuff as I told you in the bathroom and I was rude to you.”
I’m happy she’s still on the same page. It’s important to me that we get along if she’s going to be in Durango’s life. “It’s fine.”
She holds a finger up. “No, it isn’t. But it’s helped me realize I needed to work on a few things.”
Well, now I’m curious. “Anything you want to share?”
After letting out a breath, she shakes her head. “Not now but some day yes.”
Durango walks up to us. “You made it.”
I stand there as they stare at each other. No hug or kiss. Maybe things aren’t progressing the way Durango had hoped.
“Yes, I did.”
Okay, this is awkward. “I’m going to grab something from the kitchen.” I step away and head down the hall.
