“Is there something more you’re not telling me?” I ask.
He sits on his bed. “No, I just keep going over everything that happened, trying to make sense of it.” His eyes meet mine. “How did those men know Duke would be at the house? They showed up and called to him.”
I hadn’t thought of that. “Maybe Nelson knew he was on a plane? Or that he rented a car?”
Although, how would Nelson know that?
“Doubtful. And even if he did know, how would he know Duke was going to the house?”
I get up and grab the coffee from the table. “The only people who knew Duke was likely going to the house were you, me, and Ozzie.” I take a sip as I think of anyone else. Then I turn to him. “And your brother. Maybe he accidentally told the pilot or rental car company.”
I shake my head. “He wouldn’t have.”
“Okay, but he had to tell his boss in order to get the approval for everything, right?”
Logan takes another drink of his coffee and stares straight ahead. “Maybe.”
I sit across from him on my bed. “But that would mean someone in the FBI is working with Ruiz’s men.” Damn, why have I never heard that name before? Who the hell are they? Did my dad work with them?
Logan grabs his phone off the nightstand and makes a call. “Hey, Trip, can you do me a favor?” He pauses and stares at me. “I need you to look into the finances for Brian Folger.”
I frown. Does he suspect his own brother?
“Yes, he’s my brother. And I’m not sure who his boss is, but I need a report on him, too, if you can.”
If he is digging into his brother, I guess they aren’t close.
“Thanks.” He ends the call.
“You think your brother sold us out?”
He finishes his coffee and stands up. “I don’t want to think that, but until I have all the facts, I need to treat everyone as a suspect.”
I follow him to the window. “But your brother is the one who called the ambulance for my brother. If he wanted him dead, why have him taken to a hospital?”
“I’ve wondered the same thing. Maybe because others were around at that point in time.” He turns to me. “We should get to the hospital and see when Duke can be released.”
“I’ll get ready.” I shower and dress quickly while Logan makes a few more calls.
When we get to the hospital, Logan punches in a different floor on the elevator. “Your brother has been moved to a different room.”
As we get off the elevator, we are approached by a man I don’t recognize. His hair is light brown and cut short. When his eyes turn to mine, I’m struck by their color. Gray. I can’t say I’ve ever seen anyone with eyes that color.
“Delaney, this is Fox. He works with a security firm in Seattle. He’s good.”
The man holds out his hand, and I shake it. It’s then that I notice his T-shirt is snug and he’s all muscle. Why is it that everyone Logan knows is so built?
“Fox, this is Delaney, Duke’s sister.”
“Nice to meet you.”
“You too.”
“He took over for Ozzie last night so Ozzie could get some sleep,” Logan explains.
Fox glances over his shoulder. “Your brother has a visitor who just got here. Someone named Sam. He said she was cool.”
“Yeah, she is,” I say. “Which room?”
