“You’ll keep your eyes on her at all times?” he asks Ozzie.
“I will.”
He closes the door, and I roll down the window.
“Wait. That’s it?”
He turns back and shakes his head. “No, I’ll find you when I can.” Then he spins around and walks away.
Despite his words, something about this feels final. Is this how it ends? Neither one of us can say goodbye again, so he just walks away?
CHAPTER17
Logan
“What the hell happened?”Brian yells as he gets out of his car.
“I told you Duke was on his way to confront Nelson.”
Brian stands in front of me, waiting for me to say more. Finally, he sighs and waves his arms toward the other car. “Then who the fuck are all those dead men?”
I shrug. “They appeared to be after Duke, so perhaps Ruiz’s men?”
Brian takes a step back. “You know who Ruiz is?”
Well, I must be on the right track. “No, but Nelson told Delaney that it was Ruiz’s men who wanted Duke dead. When the men got out of the car, they yelled for Duke. Who the hell is Ruiz?”
“Folger, over here!” Larkin calls out.
Brian runs over, and I follow. “What do you have?” Then Brian stops at one of the bodies. “Why the hell was he here?”
I glance at the man but don’t recognize him.
“Dammit!” Brian shouts, then storms away.
“Who is it?” I ask Larkin.
He shoves his hands in his pockets as he stares sadly at the man. “An informant. A very important one.”
Now I’m confused. “I thought you had an informant in Rocky Manzia’s organization.”
The agent frowns. “You did?”
I nod. “I’m working with Brian on this.”
Larkin stares off after Brian, then turns back to me. “Well, I’m not sure how privy you are to what’s going on, but if you have questions, you’ll need to ask him.”
Is it possible my brother lied to me about having an informant ready to take down Manzia? But for what purpose?
“I will,” I tell Larkin. Then I turn and go searching for my brother.
He’s down the driveway with his phone to his ear. The wind rustles the trees covering my steps. The man doesn’t even glance behind him. I need to talk to him about his lack of awareness.
“Why the hell did you send Murray?” he yells into the phone.
Whoever is on the other line must be yelling cause I can hear a voice, but I can’t make out what they are saying.
“Yeah, well, he’s dead. Which means we no longer have a contact the cartel trusts.”
